This Principal Software Engineer opportunity will allow you to make a broad positive impact that will include building large scale distributed systems, innovating on Core OS and Virtualization components, solving complex algorithmic problems, forging real-time troubleshooting tools via complex data models, streamlining our monitoring systems, evolving our metrics to enable large scale performance optimizations, or even enabling intricate business/engineering processes.

As the Principal Software Engineeron Windows Cloud Experiences team, you will be responsible for:
  • Partners with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of scenarios.
  • Leads efforts and discussions for the architecture of aspects of products/solutions (e.g., design, cost). Creates proposals for architecture and design documents and leads testing of hypotheses and proposed solutions.
  • Leads by example and mentors' others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products. Leads efforts to optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI). Identifies best practices and coding patterns and provides deep expertise in the coding and validation strategy.
  • Leads efforts for creation and conducting of experimentation to determine the effectiveness of changes, monitors developments for prototyping and testing products, interprets results, and decides on next steps or ship decision from results.
  • Design and develop large scale distributed software services or Core OS and Virtulization components.
  • Adhere to and drive modern software engineering practices through designand codereviews.
  • System design through well-defined interfaces across multiple components, code reviews,leveragingdata/telemetry to make decisions.
  • Develop "best-in-class" engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and the componentsarewell-defined and modularized, secure, reliable, diagnosable, activelymonitoredand reusable.
  • Improve test coverage for services, organize and implement integration tests, and resolve problem areas.
  • Consider testability, portability/monitoring, reliability, and maintainability, and understand when code is ready to be shared and delivered.
  • Gain a working understanding of Microsoftas abusiness and collaborate with mentors and leaderstocontribute to cohesive, end-to-end experiences for our users.
  • Focus on customer/partner needs through a data driven approach.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
o OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
o OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

o OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience with design and implementation of enterprise-scale services.
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate and quickly understand emerging technologies.
  • Ability to generate clarity in ambiguous situations.
  • Experience Leading, Coaching and Mentoring engineers.
  • Ability to quickly ramp up, understand complex problems, and create solutions across many products.
  • Skilled verbal, written, and cross-team collaboration skills are essential to succeed in this role.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
  • Experience driving a complex multi-year infrastructure project.
  • Communication skills and experience working across disciplines and functions.
  • Experience as an engineering manager, or a technical lead with a passion for coaching and mentoring others.
Software Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
