Who We Are:

The Fire Resistance Section conducts large scale fire testing of items and assemblies for a wide range of industries including commercial construction, marine and automotive. Products are built, instrumented, and evaluated for their fire performance.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Fabrication and preparation of test specimens for evaluation following drawings and/or schematics.
  • Read and interpret test standards.
  • Setup and assist with a variety of large scale fire tests. Perform tasks in a work environment with exposure to heat, temperature extremes, noise, fumes and smoke.
  • Organize and prioritize workload and multitask while working both individually and as part of a team.
  • Perform hazard assessments and ensure safety of test setups.


Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate and prepare test samples, set up and perform tests according to test standards and specifications with minimum supervision as needed.
  • Enter data into databases and use PC and PC applications as required to carryout job assignments.
  • Set up test apparatuses requiring manual and mechanical dexterity and perform other tasks as directed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area. Operate equipment correctly and safely.
  • Move test specimens and equipment as needed to carry out work.
  • Work with Project Managers to ensure technical objectives are met.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.


Requirements:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Welding/Construction classes are desired.
  • 5-10 years: Trade school/education or experience in construction. Knowledge of wood, metal and concrete construction practices and materials. Welding experience a plus.
  • 5-10 years: Mechanical knowledge and experience with common power and hand tools. Experience with compressed gases and high-pressure systems is a plus.
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment, including respiratory equipment, operate forklift and drive Institute vehicles.
  • Must be able to work at heights on a ladder and/or boom lift.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.


Special Requirements:

Must be a U.S. person (i.e., U.S. citizen, non-U.S. citizen national, lawful permanent resident, asylee, or refugee) due to ITAR work in section.
