Overall Responsibilities

The SSI Process Engineer, a member of the Ethicon Wound Closure and Healing R&D, will participate in the development of new antibacterial device products to reduce the occurrence of Surgical Site Infections (SSI). The Engineer will seek out and incorporate new ideas into concepts that lead to new products and improvements to existing products and processes.

Key Responsibilities:

The Process Engineer, Surgical Site Infection will:

  • Provide technical support to multi-functional / multidisciplinary project teams in the design, development, and manufacturing of antibacterial surgical sutures, antibacterial surgical devices. The individual in this position would be expected to conduct hands-on experimentation and characterization.
  • Play a hands-on role in conducting lab-based development activities, analyze and interpret performance, analytical and microbiological data to guide product and process optimization, document research activities in accordance with design control requirements, and conduct all required research activities associated with development of new materials, components, raw materials, and processes for wound closure devices.
  • Effectively apply innovative scientific technical competence and technical leadership capabilities to conduct research toward design of new products, as well as supporting and improving existing product offerings.
  • Provide technical support to supply chain to ensure proper implementation and process controls for manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical support for marketed medical device products to other business functions, including Regulatory compliance activities.
  • Compile and analyze data to identify relationships/root causes to draw conclusions and generate reports.
  • Provide technical expertise, in terms of problem solving for technical and executional problems using advanced knowledge and experience. Contribute inventions, new designs, new processes, and techniques to solve technical problems based on customer needs.
  • Find opportunities for design and process improvements to achieve business goals.
  • May provide instruction to technical employees


Qualifications

Education:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 3 years industrial experience (through internships or full-time position) as a technical contributor, or at least a Master's Degree in similar fields with no industrial experience.


Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Strong background in process engineering and demonstrated understanding of correlating material properties to performance.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that embraces change, risk, and flexibility.
  • Strong background in statistics and data analysis, in particular DOE and regression analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive tasks to completion and advancing scientific knowledge.
  • Must be capable of balancing multiple projects/tasks at the same time.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to think strategically are highly desirable.


Preferred:

  • Experience/expertise with antibacterial APIs and relevant processes
  • Experience using Minitab.
  • 2+ Years Experience working with absorbable polymers or antibacterial technology.
  • Knowledge of medical devices regulations


Other:

  • This position is based in Ethicon, Raritan (NJ) and may require up to 10% (primarily domestic) travel as business needs arise. The ability to travel domestically and internationally is required.


The anticipated base pay range for this position is [$66,000] to [$106,000].

The anticipated time period this position will be posted is 5/9-5/16.

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/ performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.
