Processing Technician - Propellant Loading, Satellite Processing Zone
Merritt Island, Florida
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed and reliable broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. We are looking for talented engineers to help process and prepare Kuiper satellites for launch.
The success of Kuiper depends on the quality, reliability, cost, integration, throughput, and security of the products delivered. It is a fast paced, dynamic environment. As part of the Kuiper team, you will solve difficult problems where resolutions have high impact, and help create a brand new set of launch site processes and standards. To be successful you need to be highly motivated and detail oriented while maintaining the highest standards of execution.
The processing technicians will work as a part of a team of technicians through satellite propellant loading operations and will support other final assembly and integration activities.
The propellant loading system consists of cryogenic liquid Nitrogen and high-pressure gaseous Argon and Krypton.
The technician performs satellite load and system test per propulsion test requirements, follows and provides feedback for operational procedures, implements process controls, and supports continuous improvement. This individual will work closely with engineering and other launch operations and satellite manufacturing teams.
The ideal candidate is comfortable in a highly technical and collaborative setting and is able to
follow technical work instructions.
Key job responsibilities
• Adhere to safety requirements, standards and procedures in all work locations
• Final assembly and test of the Kuiper satellites using various ground system in a clean-room and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) controlled environment
• Load Krypton propellant into Kuiper satellites using computer controlled equipment (high pressure gases and cryogenic liquid in use)
• Independently execute assigned work to meet production schedules
• Use precision calibrated tools - torque wrenches, multi-meters, micrometers and calipers
• Perform work according to engineering drawings and technical work instructions
• Check and inspect work after completion to ensure engineering and quality standards are met per the drawing and work instruction requirements
• Collaborate with engineers to develop and document activities, including continuous improvement opportunities
• Perform other duties, as assigned, to ensure an efficient, safe and effective work environment
• Able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications as required by job responsibilities (i.e. forklift, crane)
• Mentor new/junior team members
• Willing to work overtime and weekends as required
• Shift schedule is nominally 5 days/week, 8 hours/day but may vary depending on production/launch schedules
• Must be willing and able to perform extended travel up to 25% annually, either domestically or internationally as business needs demand
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Candidates must be 18 years or older with the ability to understand and adhere to all job requirements and safety guidelines.
A day in the life
The processing technician will meet with their processing lead to understand objectives for the day and will be assigned work to perform. They will then go onto the operations floor to process satellites according to work instructions provided by engineering using propellant loading ground support equipment. They will document completed work and report non-conformances to engineering as they occur. Periodically, they will perform maintenance on the ground and facility systems supporting propellant loading. They will be expected to cross train with all other launch operations work areas to support work surges and travel to other launch sites.
