As a Forward Engineer/Product Design Engineer, your exciting, challenging, and rewarding day is started by being recognized by our Clients, our Company, and the Team as the technical expert and flange-to-flange owner of Turbo-Compressor Modernization, Upgrade, Revamp, and Footprint replacement projects. You'll work in a fast-paced environment with a dynamic, engaged, highly inventive, open and collaborative team handling challenging projects for custom engineered solutions related to the transformation of the oil and gas industry.

As the flange-to-flange core compressor project owner, with your broad technical background, you will create and optimize technical solutions that improve the performance, capabilities, reliability, and extend the useful operating life of critical turbo-machinery assets used in the Energy, Oil & Gas, and Chemicals similar industries, which includes Hydrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and other Hydrocarbon applications. You will use your ingenuity and work with a team to meet our customers' needs and specifications while optimizing mechanical solutions for complex aerodynamic, rotor dynamic, solid mechanic, acoustic, metallurgical, and other reliability challenges for a fleet of legacy and non-OEM machinery including centrifugal and axial turbo compressors, centrifugal pumps, and related equipment.

Limited domestic/international travel is required.

This hybrid position will be located at the Siemens Energy facility located in Bethlehem, PA depending on candidates skill/experience.
How You'll Make an Impact
  • Work safely following all corporate / local procedures and accurate completion of all required safety training.
  • Maintain accurate and organized engineering records.
  • Follow all processes and obtain necessary approvals where required.
  • Collaborate with team members within this department and across the organization, including but not limited to other engineering specialty subject areas, sales, marketing, quality, manufacturing, supply chain, and project management.
  • Lead engineering to support design and manufacture of replacement machinery, machinery revamps, and machinery upgrades, e.g. compressors, pumps, and related equipment, to add performance and reliability capabilities to the machinery and also extending the machinery's useful life.
  • Perform engineering investigation, calculation, and analysis for various turbo compressor designs to determine feasibility of, and ultimate implementation of re-rates, revamps, and upgrades. Effective decision making, within approved guidelines and established product standards, is a key aspect.
  • Lead product engineering design coordination, collaboration, and moderation of complex technical matters with stakeholders including: CAD Designers; various Specialist Engineers, e.g. Aero/Thermo-dynamicists, rotor-dynamicists, metallurgists, solid mechanics analysts, manufacturing engineers, etc; and field service / repair center personnel.
  • Ensure product designs are in accordance with contract requirements for the supply of hardware while meeting or exceeding company and product line standards; and, Identify/escalate deviations to established standards for management approval.
  • Participate in coordination, collaboration, and moderation of technical matters with collaborators from manufacturing and supply chain, e.g.
  • Investigate deviations and provide corrective actions;
  • review and approve first article process qualification reports associated with new processes or suppliers.
    • Analyze test results (field or factory), to evaluate and determine if thermodynamic performance, design performance, quality, and operating characteristics are aligned with product design.
    • Participate in and/or conduct process and design FMEA and RCA as a part of multi-functional team, as required.
    • Participate in development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of design tools, product improvements, and engineering standards associated with design, manufacturing, testing, and repair of turbomachinery products.
    • Participate in, and contribute to, information sharing workshops, e.g. Training/Mentoring/Coaching
    • Other miscellaneous duties to support the product lines success.
    What You Bring
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical/Aerodynamic, Chemical or equivalent degrees from an ABET accredited college/university will be considered)
    • 25 plus years' experience machinery design, rotor dynamics, strength-of-materials / solid mechanics, materials-of-construction selection, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics
    • Expert knowledge of these subjects is desirable: thermodynamics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, rotor dynamics, strength-of-materials / solid mechanics, materials-of-construction selection, machinery design.
    • Expert knowledge and understanding of Siemens Energy's products and services, e.g. Turbo Compressor Brands in portfolio: Dresser-Rand / Clark / Ingersoll-Rand, Cooper, Rolls-Royce, Demag, DeLaval
    • Expert experience engineering rotating machinery / turbo-machinery such as centrifugal/radial compressors, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, steam turbines.
    • Expert knowledge of turbo-machinery theory and thorough understanding of standard engineering principles.
    • High attention to detail and strong analytical skills with the ability and interest to perform detailed engineering calculations, prepare specifications, and write technical reports.
    • Ability to work collaboratively and individually with the same enthusiasm and intensity.
    • Possess and demonstrate a high degree of tact and professionalism; and be capable of dealing with Management, Peers, Shop Personnel, and Clients
    • Good organizational and time management skills
    • Solid computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power-Point) and basic 2D/3D CAD
    • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally with short notice (estimated 5-15% travel)
    • Familiarity and experience with industry standards including ASME and API
    • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
    Preferred
    • Master's degree
    • Experience working for a major rotating equipment supplier, machinery reliability engineer, and/or EPC.
