Responsibilities

Provides surgical assistance in the operating room to the primary surgeon during surgical procedures as a Certified First Assistant (CFA) in lieu of Resident/Fellow. As CFA, responsible for opening and closing of surgical area on behalf of primary physician. Assists surgeons with exposure, hemostasis, and other highly technical functions that will help the surgeon conduct a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, and other team members, with respect to the requirements of a particular surgical procedure. Demonstrates and maintains dexterity sufficient for successful completion of his/her assistant duties on specialty (cardiac and transplant; other specialties may be added) procedures. Functions within the limits of his/her ability, and within the scope of practice set forth by the medical staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and appropriate state law. Knowledgeable of surgical procedures, supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Responsible for room clean up, positioning and moving patients, and room turnovers. The CFA is responsible for training staff, maintenance of instruments and equipment for specified surgical specialties.

Qualifications

Qualification

Physician's Assistant, BSN, US MD in Residency or equivalent (International MD with surgery specialty)

License to practice from DC Department of Health

Completion of an accredited surgical technology program

CSFA certification (through NBSTSA), CSA (through NSAA), or SA-C certification (through ABSA) must be maintained for employment.

Maintains licensure as Surgical First Assistant were indicated by State Law

Current American Heart Association BLS

15+ years current experience in specialty of Cardiac Surgery

Able to speak and write English Fluently

Demonstrated communication, organization and critical thinking skills.

Knowledge of medical terminology

Knowledge of surgical instruments
