"Know Your Well" ( KYW ) is a youth-led citizen science program training high school students how to sample and test well water quality and promoted by Nebraska natural resources districts. Students survey domestic wells, test water samples using portable test kits, and compare their results with tests results with split samples at the University of Nebraska Water Sciences Laboratory. Over 400 private wells have been tested for nitrate, nitrite, metals, pesticides, and coliform bacteria, and we are working to have tested over 600 wells in Nebraska by 2025. Students collect land use and other data to help determine vulnerability to contamination and interpret laboratory results. Well owners are supplied with test results and provided with information to help them evaluate their water quality. "Know Your Well" is helping well owners and future water scientists in Nebraska know more about ground water in our state.
