General Description

Position requires administration of the WIDA Screener to determine a student's English language proficiency, and other assessments to determine appropriate class and grade placement. English Language skills through assessments and. Works collaboratively and supports teachers, administrators, office staff, ESOL Support Specialists, and parents. Requires ability to assess language acquisition and use state mandated tests with all ELs K-12. Advises teachers and administrators on correct appropriate grade and class placement to meet the assessed needs of the identified EL; parents of CCPS school procedure, registration requirements, English language assessment results and placement options, preferably in a written or oral language they understand.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions:

  • Complete Screening Assessments for students K-12, compliant with State and Title VI, to identify an ELP Level.
  • Evaluates international and local transcripts from previous schools to ensure correct placement in academic programs.
  • Support School Liaisons to review course options available K-12.
  • Compile internal data on EL entry numbers, chart trends, and guide the ESOL Department in future course expansion, including curriculum planning.
  • Interpret messages from parents in Spanish and follow up in support of their needs.
  • Translate documents to Spanish to support the ESL Department meet Department requirements as needed
  • Provide parents with resources to support their involvement engagement in the school system, i.e. English classes for Adults and health services as required by Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015
  • Maintain accurate records of testing data for ELs to meet State Department requirements
  • Serves as a resource on ESL-related matters for teachers, school administrators, instructional personnel, parents and others.
  • Assists in coordinating referrals of ESL students for special placements
  • Communicates regularly with the ESL Support Specialists, principals, and other ESL teachers via e-mail and telephone in order to optimize effectiveness of service.
  • Communicates regularly with ESL Departments and Schools in outside divisions via e-mail and telephone in order to optimize effectiveness of service.
  • Communicates regularly with parents.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence and program effectiveness and efficiency
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Physical Demands :

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a school environment (the employee works in the ESOL office or in a public school). The noise level in the work environment is moderate and work pace varies.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English as a Second Language and of the concepts, principles and methodologies of English Learner Identification processes.

Working knowledge of student database system functions.

Working knowledge of program implementation, learning theory and recent research in ESOL.

Working skill in the use of technology to deliver and assess English language proficiency.

Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments; to train and advise teaching staff regarding ESL Newcomer students; to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning.

Requirements

GED or High School Diploma. General office experience involving the performance of clerical tasks; any equivalent combination of experience and training, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid driver's license. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
