Summary:

The part-time Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling and education to patients with ALS in the ALS clinic at Temple University's Lewis Katz School of Medicine.

Essential Functions:

Provide education surrounding genetic testing at ALS Clinic.

• Acquire, organize, compile and edit educational materials to explain genetic testing.

• Formulate and lead educational program about ramifications of genetic testing.

• Link genetics education with its potential effects on ALS.

• Establish a strong sense of understanding with clinic patients regarding the benefits and concerns of genetic testing.

• Train and mentor department to grow genetic counseling services as part of ALS clinic.

Offer compassionate, complex genetic counseling.

• Prepare for cases by reviewing relevant medical records to evaluate patient medical history.

• Assess family medical history to discuss risks and make recommendations.

• Recognize key clinical facts that suggest genetic risk beyond chief complaint

• Perform genetic risk assessment and explain natural history of diagnosis, explain genetic factors, explain available testing.

• Order and interpret genetic test results.

• Share relevant information with patient's healthcare team.

Support ongoing ALS research.

• Recognize emerging technologies and advances that may affect clinical care.

• Maintain medical records

• Participate in data collection as it relates to genetic counseling.

• Contribute to writing of IRB protocol as it relates to genetic counseling.

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

Required: Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years' of directly related experience. License in Genetic Counseling.

Preferred.

*Masters in Genetic Counseling.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

This position requires a background check.

This is a grant funded position.

Please note this position will work remotely, the duration of remote work will be at the discretion of Temple University and the department.
