Why does the job exist?

The New Mexico State Department of Information Technology endeavors to provide the highest levels of service delivery for Mission Critical Radio System & Wireless Communications to Regional, Local Government, Federal and Tribal Agencies for Law Enforcement, First Responder, Critical Services, and Public Works entities located and operating within the geographic areas of the State of New Mexico. The IT Land Mobile Radio Systems Support Specialist II works together with Radio Shop Team members to meet our customers' needs, collaborate on scheduling and working together on rolling call back after hours schedule. This includes the physical installation, repair and replacement of equipment, and the troubleshooting of complex two-way land mobile radio systems and services.

How does it get done?

The IT Public Safety Radio & Microwave Technician II is responsible for:

-Performing technical and administrative support to the enterprise land mobile radio, voice and data systems provided and maintained by the Department of Information Technology
- Practiced in using the Microsoft Office Operating System and be skillful in using applications such as Outlook, Word & Excel (Experience and practice in using Power Point, Visio, and other applications is also a plus).
-Practiced in IT Computer skills to be able to perform work within network domain, cloud-based environment, client to host connection & portal services.
-Installation & Maintenance of Wireless Radio communication systems:
- UHF/VHF Legacy base & repeater infrastructure.
- VHF/700/800 P25 Digital Wireless infrastructure.
- Microwave Radio Network infrastructure.
- Antenna Systems & Antenna Structures.
- Radio dispatching systems.
- Subscriber Equipment (radios)
-Installation & Maintenance of I.P. data communication systems:
- Wireless data solutions.
- Data network transport solutions.
-Voice network transport solutions.
-Providing assistance to other employees in these tasks, providing on-the-job training and instruction to other employees in these tasks.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in radio frequency (RF) applications, particularly in the land-mobile radio (LMR) and microwave radio fields with specific experience designing, managing, or maintaining public safety radio systems using conventional analog technologies, digital P25 and trunking technologies, microwave back-haul systems, dispatch console systems, and Motorola ASTRO25 M-Core-based systems.
- Knowledge of communications site infrastructure and related systems, including: basic electronic and electrical theory, to include AC and DC power distribution systems, uninterruptable power supplies, and -48 volt DC battery plant and rectifier systems; the R56 grounding and bonding standards for communications sites
- Knowledge and experience operating RF and electronic test equipment including voltmeters, communications service monitors, spectrum analyzers, antenna analyzers, radio service software, and common tools required for maintaining and installing site equipment.
- Certifications and/or licenses that demonstrate knowledge in the fields of electronics, electrical engineering, RF systems/engineering, two-way/land mobile radio, microwave radio, networking, and/or telecommunications.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in network administration. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License; obtain Defensive Driving Certification within 30 days of employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Long hours (10-12 hour days) are occasionally necessary due to travel time or to cope with system outages and other critical maintenance issues. Work is done in the office, shop and field environments. Driving long distances is sometimes necessary on improved and unimproved roads. Lifting in excess of 50 - 70 pounds is not uncommon. Transportation and operation of all-terrain/four-wheel-drive vehicles in mountainous terrain is sometimes required. Working in odd physical postures is necessary when installing, troubleshooting, or repairing equipment. Exposure to hazardous or extreme weather conditions is sometimes required. This position requires regular day travel and occasional overnight travel to varying locations throughout the state.
