The primary objective of the UNCW Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. The department is comprised of three divisions - Support Services, Investigations, and Operations. The officers who staff these divisions are duly sworn, certified, armed, and empowered with the same authority as other local law enforcement officers in the State of North Carolina as regulated by the North Carolina Department of Justice. Telecommunicators, program managers and command-level personnel provide administrative support for the various divisions. The department also employs full-time and part-time security guards who assist community members by performing building patrols, area patrols, escorts, and access to other departmental services.

The Public Safety Telecommunicator Supervisor manages the activities of the Emergency Communications Center ( ECC ), including the supervision of Public Safety Telecommunicators. Supervision of the work in the ECC involves:

  • Receiving emergent, non-emergent, and administrative calls; obtaining and relaying information
  • Monitoring alarms, prioritizing calls/alarms and coordinating response procedures
  • Dispatching appropriate public safety personnel, maintaining public safety communication logs and database
  • Initiating emergency notification processes and systems, and the use of law enforcement and organizational systems and databases to aid public safety response efforts.




This position participates in the planning and evaluation of the Center’s operations, coordinates activities with other departments, divisions, and external agencies; assists in the development of policies and procedures affecting operations of the Emergency Communications Center, and provides for direct supervision, including performance reviews and general disciplinary actions of assigned Public Safety Telecommunicator Operators. As a working supervisor, this employee will also be responsible for performing all of the duties of a Public Safety Telecommunicator on an as needed basis. Positions provide supervision and oversight to the ECC . This is advanced work of considerable difficulty in supervising and directing Telecommunicators in the day-to-day operations of the Emergency Communications Center. The Emergency Communications Center ( ECC ) is a complex fast-paced environment that requires exceptional multi-tasking skills. This position will be required to be apart of a shared on-call rotation for support of the communications center.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma and three years of experience in emergency communications including one year of administrative and/or lead supervisory experience. Additional Education and Experience will be necessary for progressive steps (Journey and Advanced). Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator. May require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, methods, and practices
  • Knowledge of techniques of public safety dispatch and organization




Required Certifications or licensure
  • Certification as a DCI module 1-3 operator or ability to be certified
  • Telecommunication Supervisor certificate or ability to attain within department time lines
  • Serves as agency TAC
