Mission or Goal of Unit: The mission of the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine is to provide the best clinical care available for patients with lung disease and associated medical illnesses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We feel that this care can best be delivered within the VCU Health System. Our mission is further to provide the best teaching of lung disease and associated disorders to future physicians. Finally, we strive to explore critically important lung and vascular and metabolic diseases through organized research.

Chief Purpose of this position: The chief purpose of this recruitment is to hire a qualified pulmonary and critical care physician interested in focusing on Advanced Lung Diseases, which include Interstitial Lung Diseases, Sarcoidosis and Bone Marrow Transplant related lung disease while expanding critical care and general pulmonology coverage.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching | The successful candidate would be expected to be active within the greater residency program, becoming active in the recruitment, education, and advisory of DOIM residents.

Provide teaching service to learners, including medical students, interns and residents.
  • Use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levels
  • Complete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner - including but not limited to written and verbal feedback
  • Participate in other learning activities such as foundations of clinical medicine, morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners
Clinical | Primary clinical responsibilities will be to provide exemplary care in Advanced Lung Diseases, which include Interstitial Lung Diseases, Sarcoidosis and Bone Marrow Transplant related lung disease while expanding critical care and general pulmonology coverage.

Outpatient
  • Clinic/Outreach: The successful applicant will assist with outreach for our general pulmonary and advanced lung diseases programs.Outreach involves expanding the outpatient clinic footprint of VCU Health and bringing in new patients to the Health System.
Inpatient
  • Critical Care Support: The successful candidate will aid in meeting our growing needs for critical care services and essential as we restructure critical care consultation services including night coverage, procedural and sedation services, staffing of new admissions to the ICU, supporting house-staff and the Advanced Practice Providers (APP) team thereby increasing critical care capacity.
  • Pulmonary Consultation services
Required Qualifications:
  • The candidate chosen will have performed a residency in Internal Medicine and be fellowship-trained in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine. In addition, the candidate must have a focused interest in advanced lung diseases (Sarcoidosis, Interstitial Lung Diseases)
  • The successful candidate must have a demonstrated interest in subspecialities within Pulmonary Medicine such as but not limited to Sarcoidosis or Interstitial Lung Diseases. The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at VCU has recognized centers in Pulmonary Hypertension, Cystic Fibrosis, Sarcoidosis and Interstitial lung Diseases. The successful candidate must have proven skills relevant to the practice of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, including significant clinical experience in general medical critical care.
  • In addition, the successful candidate must have an interest in providing clinical care in the community at VCU partner sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in subspecialties within Pulmonary Medicine including but not limited to Sarcoidosis or Interstitial Lung Diseases.
  • Previous experience in a program that has Lung Transplantation services is a plus.
