Job Summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is hiring a Radiation Safety Technician.

Radiation Safety Technician II will oversee the collection and disposal of radioactive waste, the receiving and shipping of radioactive materials, instrument calibrations, performing audits to ensure regulatory compliance, and maintaining records as required per regulatory standards. The Radiation Safety Technician II position is part of our Radioactive Materials Program . The Radioactive Materials Program holds a broad-scope RAM license that covers multiple Nuclear Medicine clinics, 100 RAM sublicenses to PIs for research, interventional radiology , and radiation oncology procedures . The Radioactive Materials program also covers our cyclotron facility , use of Gamma Knife and GammaPod for radiation therapies , and cutting edge technologies including PET MR for nuclear medicine research and PET LINAC for adaptive radiation therapy .

Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and no experience.
  • Associate's degree in science related field and two (2) years experience in general safety or hazardous waste fields related experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with four (4) years experience in general safety or hazardous waste fields related experience.
  • Two (2) years military experience and specific job related training or other relevant previous employment experience may be substituted for associate's degree.
Job Duties
  1. Helps ensures the safe use of hazardous materials through licensure, registration, and compliance with accepted environmental, health, and safety standards.
  2. Performs safety inspections and tracks items for resolution.
  3. Identifies potential safety hazards, documents identified conditions, and takes action to correct identified deficiencies.
  4. Conducts or ensures testing, inspection, and maintenance of safety equipment and systems.
  5. May perform periodic pick up, transportation, segregation, and processing of hazardous materials.
  6. Maintains storage areas, equipment, and personal protective equipment related to hazardous materials.
  7. Maintains required records and documentation.
  8. Assists in preparing for and responding to emergencies including hazardous materials incidents. Participates in emergency drills including fire drills.
  9. Individual may be on-call or emergency situations may require the individual to respond at times outside of set work schedule.
  10. This position is designated as essential. Personnel in designated essential positions are expected to report to work as required in the event of an emergency to sustain institutional services or protect assets.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge and Skills
  • Work requires exercise of moderate judgment in application of policy, procedures, or practices to work problems of well-defined nature.
  • Work requires contact outside the work unit in obtaining facts, making inspections, and explaining procedures, policies, and regulations relating to problems of recurring but non-routine nature.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills necessary
Working Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Working conditions involve more than average exposure to hazardous equipment or materials.
