General Statement of Duties

Open until filled . This is a 231 day contract. Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of reading acquisition and pedagogy, learning theory, and best practices for effective Tier I, II, and III instruction. Must demonstrate abilities to provide school-level leadership in the areas of reading and language arts, work collaboratively with all members of the school and division team, provide support to teachers in planning and delivering instruction, analyze student performance data and create action plans, and deliver high quality instruction to meet individual and group needs. Acts in the best interests of students and models appropriate behaviors in all professional interactions.

Demonstrates knowledge and support of the mission and goals of Henrico County Public Schools and of An Achievable Dream Certified Academy.

Ability to fulfill contractual obligations by working extended hours and assigned Saturdays for which there will be additional compensation.

Essential Duties

    • Provides daily leadership and support for reading and language arts instruction in grades pre-kindergarten - five in accordance with state and division guidelines and division priorities with the goal of maximizing student engagement and achievement

    • Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff including but not limited to exceptional education, gifted, remediation, volunteers, administration, and division-level coaches and specialists

    • Analyzes formative and summative data and works collaboratively with other members of the instructional team to plan and deliver targeted instruction and to design professional development with the goal of maximizing impact on student engagement and achievement

    • Directly coaches and assists teachers and interventionists in analyzing data, planning and delivering instruction, and creating appropriate assessments

    • Maintains records of student performance and growth and effectively communicates this with students, parents, and other staff

    • Directly provides individual and group instruction in reading and language arts, demonstrating an expert knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and district goals and resources

    • Maintains effective and positive classroom management in a well-organized learning environment

    • Selects and uses a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students

    • Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning

    • Stays abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction, effective schools, and student achievement

    • Maintains professional manner when interacting with students, families, school and division staff, patrons, and community agencies

    • Maintains the inventory of reading and writing materials i n an accessible location within the school

    • Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of Henrico County Public Schools

    • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Must possess a comprehensive understanding of reading acquisition and pedagogy, learning theory, and best practices for effective Tier I, II, and III instruction. Must be able to work collaboratively and professionally with all members of the instructional team and coordinate support for teachers with division coaches and specialists and administration. Must be able to serve as a literacy leader for the school through teaching, coaching, and coordination and assessment of the reading and language arts program. Must demonstrate the ability to plan, model, and deliver current research-based practices in reading instruction and be able to assess student responsiveness to that instruction through observation and analysis of assessment data.
  • Master's degree and Reading Specialist endorsement (or proof of enrollment in a Reading Specialist program) is required.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience required.
  • Experience in grades K through 5 is preferred.


Additional Information

The academy operates on an extended day Monday through Thursday (8.5 hours), 8 hours on Fridays and approximately 18 Saturdays throughout the school year.

Most reading specialist positions within our division are based upon a 220-day contract length. However, due to the unique and expanded opportunities provided by this partnership, compensation will include a 231-day contract. In addition to the extended contract, there is also a supplemental contract for the extended day program at An Achievable Dream Certified Academy- $6600 (estimated) supplemental pay per year.

Minimum annual starting salary: *** $55,776.41 (Bachelors). $58,453.81 (Masters).
