Responsibilities*
  • Perform daily and weekly grounds maintenance, including mowing, string trimming, edging sidewalks, picking up litter, and emptying garbage cans.
  • Remove snow and ice from walks, drives, parking lots, steps, ramps, parking structures, and building entrances utilizing snow plow trucks, power brooms, power
  • blades, truck mounted salting equipment, and hand shovels using road salt, ice melters, and deicers.
  • Install and repair irrigation systems, including valves, sprinkler heads, low-voltage electrical components, and controllers.
  • Operate and program irrigation systems using automated computer programs.
  • Maintain irrigation system pits and housing areas, including pressurizing and winterizing.
  • Diagnose turf, plant and tree diseases and pest problems and determine appropriate course of actions, including interior and exterior pesticide applications, fertilizations, or
  • other techniques.
  • Determine correct chemical product, rates and calibrations.
  • Mix and apply selective and non-selective herbicides or fertilizers in properly calibrated proportions to lawns, athletic fields and flower and shrub beds.
  • Perform chemical applications using specialized equipment.
  • Maintain application records and product inventories, and order stock when needed.
  • Evaluate tree, shrub and brush conditions and determine need for pruning or removal.
  • Remove trees, shrubs and brush using chainsaws, lifts, wood chippers and stump grinders.
  • Install and maintain new tree and shrub plantings.
  • Plant, transplant, fertilize, cultivate and irrigate perennial, biennial and annual plant and shrubbery beds.
  • Maintain beds by removing and controlling unwanted vegetation and weeds by weeding, hand removal or cultivation and mulching beds for weed control.
  • Fix damaged turf areas by sod cutting, tilling, adding soil and planting new seed or laying sod.
  • Maintain and clean roadways, parking lots and parking structures such as filling potholes with cold patch or hot asphalt, use street sweeper to clean curb and drain ways, pick up litter and empty garbage cans.
  • Collect and haul recyclable material (cardboard, paper, etc.) to off campus recycle centers.
  • Operate power equipment and machinery including tractors, zero turn mowers, riding and rotary mowers, push mowers, walk behind and hand blowers, vacuuming equipment, power and hand fertilizing equipment and other motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment including front-end loaders, bobcats and backhoes to load and unload trucks and trailers, remove snow out of parking lots and off of parking structures and assist other departments with help when needed.
  • Clean and maintain assigned equipment and make adjustments for proper operation including sharpening blades, checking fluids, greasing and lubricating equipment.
  • Repair and adjust equipment with the assistance of a mechanic.
  • Mentor and train new groundskeepers, temporary staff and student workers.

Related Duties
  • Clean assigned areas of work and equipment.
  • Collect, haul and dispose of refuse and debris.
  • Install and replace signs and sign posts.
  • Erect street and pedestrian barricades, and hang banners.
  • Clean drainage systems.
  • Provide customer service to the university standards.
  • Operate lift for various applications on campus, including holiday lights and banners.

Required Qualifications*
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's License and good driving record.
  • Proficiency with computers including microsoft outlook and the ability to put in and retrieve work orders.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experiences in general grounds keeping activities in a similar facility is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience or a combination of education and experience equivalent to 2 years in the identification and maintenance of annual, perennial and ornamental plants and trees is required.
  • Knowledge of broad range of trees and plants.
  • Knowledge of and ability to correctly plant, stake, fertilize, cultivate and mulch trees and plants.
  • Ability to safely apply salts and deicers to melt snow from all areas on campus.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pound weights and load them into a truck several times a day.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner, including the ability to use proper lifting techniques, properly wear a respirator, hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, fall harness and to follow and use any other personal safety procedures and apparatuses required for a safe job function.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation, installation and repair procedures and materials for underground irrigation systems and related components.
  • Knowledge and ability in the use of grounds equipment, power and hand tools.

Desired Qualifications*
  • A minimum of one (1) years of experience in underground irrigation systems installation, repair and maintenance is desired.

Work Schedule

This position requires a fully in-person work schedule at this time and is subject to change based upon the duties of the position and the needs of the department.
