Responsibilities
The Mayo Clinic Pre-Op/PACU (Perianesthesia) 101 Training Program is designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for a nursing career in the Pre-Operative and Post Anesthesia Care unit (PACU). The program will be for experienced RNs and New Graduate RNs, however some nursing experience in an acute care setting is preferred. This position will provide high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to help you become a Perianesthesia RN.
The Pre-Op/PACU (Perianesthesia) 101 program is 36-40 hours per week. The didactic portion of training is typical 40 hours per week, 5 days per week starting at 8am. The clinical portion of training can be 36-40 hours per week, and will likely be 10 or 12 hour shifts. Pre-Op/PACU (Perianesthesia) 101 students follow their preceptor's schedule and the schedules can range from 0500 - 2300, Monday-Friday.
The Perianesthesia 101 Nurses transition to their permanent schedule upon completion of the 26-week program.

Satisfactory performance at the end of the 26-week training program will lead to an offer to continue employment as a Perianesthesia RN. The start date of this program will be July 29, 2024. Relocation is offered for those outside of a 70-mile radius. Details shared upon job offer when applicable.

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.
This role is eligible for TN sponsorship.

What do Pre-Op/PACU Nurses do at Mayo Clinic?
- Focuses on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure, however they do not perform the actual surgery. This includes Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU and Phase 2 PACU.
- Assess, quickly identify and resolve pre-operative issues.
- Starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-operative medications and performing pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures.
- In the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit), the nurse will provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia.

Qualifications
- Graduate of a nursing program.
- All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with a RN start date after April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.
- Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program, preferred.
- One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is preferred.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
- Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
- Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
- Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
- Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
- Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area. In Florida, ACLS is required upon hire.
