Under the supervision of the Staff Services Manager I, and under the immediate direction, control, and responsibility of an attorney, the Legal Assistant performs a wide variety of paralegal duties and other related work. The incumbent works as an assistant to attorneys and can properly be delegated the more routine paralegal duties by an attorney. The successful candidate will work both independently and as part of a legal team on sensitive and complex matters for the Commission.

Working Conditions
The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location.

1) Ability to locate a statute and regulation when given a citation. Ability to accurately read a statute or regulation and understand how the subdivisions of a citation relate to one another.
2) Ability to accurately interpret the less complex statutes and regulations.
3) Working knowledge of basic legal concepts, terminology, and procedures and the ability to apply this knowledge at an entry analytical level.
4) Knowledge of the use of legal reference materials, specifically the California Style Manual.
5) Knowledge of Westlaw.
6) Ability to provide a well-reasoned explanation for a recommended course of action relative to the position's level of authority to do so.
7) Ability to set forth a written statement of the facts, identification of the legal issues, application of the relevant law, and legally supported conclusion at the position's level of authority to do so.
8) Experience working with Attorneys.
9) Paralegal or law office training and experience.
10) Ability to work well with others at all levels.
