Job DescriptionThe Remote Carpenter/ PM Tech constructs, erects, installs, maintains, remodels, and repairs structures. Performs preventative maintenance on enviro-vac bathroom facilities. Supports remote camps and facilities overall operation and maintenance. Assists other techs with repairs toplumbing and electrical,refrigeration equipment, heating and cooling equipment, envirovac toilet units. All duties are to be performed in accordance with NMS' mission, vision, and values.Responsibilities
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, or building plans for determine required materials and the dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Selects materials, prepares layout, cuts or shapes, and fastens materials together. Erects framework for structures and lays sub-flooring.
  • Builds stairs, walls, etc. Lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.
  • Fabricates desks, cabinets, bookshelves, countertops, and computer stations.
  • Constructs arctic entries, installs, and repairs doors and windows, lays carpet, linoleum, tile, etc.
  • Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, door frames, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates.
  • May paint with spray equipment, brushes, or rollers. Hangs, patches, tapes, and textures sheet rock.
  • Always provides the highest quality of service to the customer.
  • Performs all assigned preventative maintenance work.
  • Repair equipment and systems associated with remote envirovac stations including water and wastewater pumping, storage, and distribution systems.
  • Makes structure repairs to masonry, woodwork and furnishings, patch or replace plaster/plaster board, paint walls, ceilings, and trim.
  • Uses hand and power tools, precision measuring and testing devices to test, diagnose, and repair equipment. Must be able to dismantle equipment and install working parts.
  • Maintains a log of all work performed, parts needed, or parts used on all work requests.
  • Records utility readings and equipment readings daily and maintain current period readings in maintenance office.
  • Clears clogged drains and repair plumbing fixtures.
  • Assists in maintaining and repairing HVAC systems in all camps and facilities.
  • Removes ice and snow from sidewalks and entrances to the camps and facilities.
  • May erect scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
  • Attends daily safety toolbox meetings and is required to do job safety evaluations for each job.
  • Notify supervisor if safety and sanitation standards are not being met.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
  • Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least five (5) years of experience working in the carpentry field.
  • Prior experience must include work in such areas as layout, reading plans, reading blueprints and drawings, determining material needs and specifications, finish, trim, cabinetry, metal stud fabrication, sheet metal, Formica, flooring, glass glazing and painting.
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS' vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements which may include but are not limited to drug test, physical and fit for duty assessment and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for paying for travel to the nearest testing facility.
  • Must be able to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers, and clients.
  • Must be able to make decisions in the moment with little to no supervision.
  • Must be able to be on your feet for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
  • Must be able to live in dormitory style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
  • Contract requires employees to speak, understand, read and write English.
  • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.
Preferred Experience
  • Five (5) years of directly related camp or facility maintenance experience to include but not limited to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and refrigeration repairs.
  • Exposure to north slope or remote type work settings.
  • Knowledge of and experience erecting different types of scaffolding.
  • Experience with computer-based work management systems.
  • Experience bidding projects and procuring material.
CANDIDATES RESIDING OUTSIDE ANCHORAGE AREA:Candidates residing in Alaska & the Lower 48 for any contract : For the purposes of pre-employment testing, Anchorage will be considered the point of hire (with the exception of drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate's place of residence).   • Allow 30 second rest after each 50 steps, self-paced,
  • Stairs and Carry: Climb up and down 10 steps x 5 for a total of 50 steps while carrying 50 lbs. in one hand and using the other hand to grasp a railing for safety, self-paced.
  • Allow a 60 second rest period after climbing up and down 25 steps while carrying .
  • Slanted Ladder: Climb a slanted ladder with 2 rungs x 2 repetitions for a total of 4 rungs, self- paced but continuous.
