Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

BS in biology, interdisciplinary studies, environmental science, chemistry or related disciplines and at least 5-years experience in operation, maintenance, and training for use of analytical platforms (ICP-MS, Total and Methyl Mercury, etc.) used quantification of heavy metals from biotic and abiotic samples.

Position Summary

This is a highly responsible technical position involving experience with the use of sophisticated analytical equipment and use of protocols for preparation of samples for analytical analyses of metals and radionuclides. This individual will be responsible for coordinating all fee for service analytical analyses conducted for metals and radionuclides at SREL, planning and scheduling sample processing, conducting analytical analyses, delivery of data to customers, and final billing. This individual also will be responsible for maintaining analytical equipment in working order and maintaining proper calibration and QA/QC to ensure data accuracy and precision. This incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that all research activities performed in SREL's Analytical Services facilities involving chemicals and other hazardous substances are conducted in a safe and secure manner in compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations. This individual will report to the SREL Director to ensure that all appropriate permitting, oversight, and coordination activities are in place for research activities conducted by SREL personnel and visiting scholars in SREL's Analytical Services facilities. This employee will serve as the subject matter expert for development of all non-radiological Project Safety Appraisals needed by SREL staff to conduct research in SREL's Analytical Services facilities. Duties are subject to modification at the Director's discretion as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Significant experience with the management of budgets for fee for service analytical services type programs, including knowledge of how to conduct monthly income/expenditure tracking, budget reconciliation, and client invoicing.
  • Significant experience with the development and management of projects for analysis of heavy metals on a variety of analytical platforms, including estimation of materials and consumables for project use, appropriate analytical protocols for various media types, estimation of equipment time for analysis, hazardous waste disposal, safety requirements, and appropriate quality assurance/quality control and data handling skills.
  • Experience in training of personnel on how to prepare samples for use on analytical platforms for heavy metals analysis, including knowledge of the use of standard operating procedures, analytical procedures, and safety requirements for analytical laboratory work.
  • Experience with overseeing staff and graduate students being trained for analytical sample preparation and knowledge of supervisory skills needed to handle day to day supervision of employees and job performance reviews.
  • Significant experience with and knowledge of the regulatory requirements needed to conduct analytical analyses for heavy metals as outlined by the University of Georgia, Department of Energy, and the Savannah River Site as well as the ability to develop appropriate safety postings, chemical inventories, hazardous waste disposal protocols, and protective equipment requirements for work conducted in an analytical laboratory.

Budgetary Management:
  • Management of an internal fee for service analytical program at SREL which handles 7,500 to 10,000 samples per year and which has an annual income of 300-400 thousand in fee dollars per year.
  • Oversight for all budget management, invoicing, month to month accounting and income/expenditure tracking, budget reconciliation, and funding allocation for the SREL Analytical Services income account.
  • Negotiating service contracts for analytical platforms with manufacturers, evaluation and selection of annual fee contracts with vendors providing gases for use in analytical analyses and similar activities.
  • Meets monthly with the Director to provide updates on budgetary matters related to the Analytical Services Program at SREL.

Project Management and Development:
  • Primary point of contact for all SREL faculty, staff and students who seek to utilize SREL's Analytical Services Program for their research activities.
  • Consults with users to develop detailed, project specific protocols that determine needed supplies (and costs) for sample processing, specific analytical protocols that will be necessary to perform sample preparation and analysis, equipment time needed to conduct the research, hazardous waste generation and disposal plans, safety training requirements, and permits that might be required to conduct the research.
  • Oversees all quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) activities that are required to generate reliable and accurate data; and is responsible for calculating and providing each researcher with all of the QA/QC metadata, data conversions, and estimated Minimum Detection Limit thresholds for all data generated through SREL's Analytical Services Program.

Training:
  • Serves as the primary authority for all researcher access to all equipment maintained in SREL's Analytical Services Program, including millions of dollars in analytical assets such as standard and high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry systems, total and methyl mercury analyzers, X-Ray Diffraction and X-Ray Fluorescence machines, high resolution alpha, beta, and gamma detection systems, and a variety of equipment used to process samples for analyses on these platforms.
  • Conduct hands on training on standard operating procedures, analytical protocols, and safety requirements to all individuals who utilize any one of four laboratories at SREL for sample processing or analysis.
  • Conduct sign offs as being competent to perform the analytical procedures prior to any individual beginning any hands-on work in SREL's Analytical Services Laboratories. (Approximately 20 to 30 SREL staff and students are trained and certified for research activities by this position each year)
