Summary

Position Highlights:

Embark on a fulfilling career as a Research Animal Care Technician in the newly developed Comparative Medicine Core(CMC) at Moffitt Cancer Center. The Comparative Medicine Core oversees and supports Moffitt's animal research and technical support. We are looking to hire Research Animal Care Technicians to join our team and ensure the professional husbandry and care of a variety of laboratory animals. Experience in the field will determine the level to be considered.

The Animal Research Technician Associate is an entry-level position that builds skills in providing husbandry and care to a variety of laboratory animals. This position will learn and perform husbandry and health checks for all species on campus.

Responsibilities:


  • Perform daily, weekend, and holiday professional husbandry and care of the animals housed in the centrally managed animal.

  • Prepare caging, bedding, feed, and water in accordance with practices and procedures for the assigned animals to ensure the maintenance of their health status.

  • Handle animals using accepted practices and techniques.

  • Set up rooms and equipment for incoming studies in accordance with approved procedures.

  • Follow sentinel monitoring procedures to ensure the health of the rodent colonies.

  • Work independently in rodent facilities in an isolated work environment to maintain the barrier operation and protect the integrity of the animal research being conducted. Husbandry care includes those animals exposed to hazardous materials including biohazards, chemical hazards, radiation and combinations of all 3.

  • Monitor animal health and environment conditions.

  • Report noncompliance with rodent population guidelines.

  • Perform quality assurance tests for cage wash, bulk autoclave and hand washing equipment to ensure equipment is being cleaned properly.

  • Change cages, scrape dirty bedding from cages, clean and disinfect cages, water bottles, racks, and bedding pans on a regular basis. May use rack washer and autoclaves.



Credentials and Minimum Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma/GED with two (2) years of animal care related experience is required.

  • Overtime may be required; weekend and holiday coverage may be required.

  • Basic knowledge of animal care.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Basic computer and data-entry skills.

  • Must be able to pull/push large heavy equipment; push/pull equipment up and down ramps; repetitive lifting/turning/bending/reaching (high and stretching low).

  • Exhibit professional behavior.



Preferred

AS/BA/BS in Animal Science or relevant field with 1 year of animal care related experience is preferred.
