In the Environmental Science and Management Department , we offer real-world insights into environmental challenges and solutions, by integrating multiple perspectives in human and natural systems.
Our faculty conduct research and collaborate across atmospheric, freshwater, marine, terrestrial, and human systems from local to global scales. Our expertise spans many critically relevant topics, including air and water quality, biological invasions, contaminants and pollution, ecosystem and community ecology, ecosystem services, environmental justice, habitat fragmentation, hydrology, global climate change, land use, natural resource and environmental policy, social science, and wildfire management.
Through this expertise and partnerships, we train students to become environmental scientists, managers, and professionals in a variety of environmental careers.
Position Summary
A non-tenure track appointment for a faculty member who is primarily engaged in research at a level normally appropriate for a professorial rank.
The position will serve as PI or Co-PI on externally sponsored research awards. Research activities will include the design, implementation, and communication of applied and basic research on social-ecological systems in the western US or other study regions. Specific topics will include the management of wildland fire risk, fire adapted communities, National Forest management, and related topics. The position will work closely with researchers affiliated with the USDA Forest Service Research Stations and other academic and agency organizations to ensure outputs from the position meet research needs.
The position also will be responsible for developing testable research hypotheses, collecting empirical data, designing modeling experiments, analyzing research results, writing and communicating research findings to professional and scholarly audiences, and supervising research other research staff, including research assistants, post-docs, and other research staff.
This position may be renewed contingent on funding.

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
The starting annual salary for this position will be $86,016 (at 1.0 FTE ) but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.

Primary Activity R - Research Minimum Qualifications
- An advanced degree in their field of specialization from an accredited program in their discipline.
- Four or more years of progressively responsible research experience.
- Minimum 3 years experience with network analysis and network models (e.g., ERGMs)
- Minimum 3 years experience with landscape simulation models
- Minimum 1 year experience with mechanistic large fire growth models (e.g., FSIM , FConstMTT)
- Demonstrable R programming and data visualization skills
- Possession of a valid State-issued driver's license
- 3 years experience working with USFS Fire Program Analysis data
- Advanced R programming and data visualization skills
- Established peer-reviewed publication record drawing on above skills
- Demonstrated record of independent relationship development with federal agency personnel focused on funding opportunities
