Department Summary

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at UNT is committed to excellence in education and research, addressing the scientific and engineering needs of Texas and the nation. Our professors and researchers have expertise in metals, ceramics, polymers, electronic materials and computational materials science, and many are internationally and nationally known for their work. In addition to numerous research labs, including the Materials Research Facility, the department supports the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes Institute (AMMPI) and the Center for Friction Stir Processing.

Position Overview

We are hiring a new research faculty member specializing in rechargeable batteries and energy materials, a critical area for advancing sustainable energy solutions. This Research Assistant Professor will enhance our research capabilities by leading innovative projects and significantly contributing to our department's research output. Additionally, they will play a key role in mentoring graduate students, ensuring hands-on experience with cutting-edge research and preparing them for leadership in materials science.

This position is to perform research on materials development and for rechargeable batteries and integrated batteries and devices including:
i. Designing and developing materials specifically for rechargeable batteries.
ii. Develop composite structural batteries and advanced batteries
iii. Conducting electrochemical characterization of active materials to assess their suitability and functionality in battery application.
iv. Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals
v. Training students

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering or Chemical Engineering
2. Publication record in rechargeable batteries and energy materials
3. Experience in battery material synthesis, characterization, battery performance test

Preferred Qualifications

Study record in Li-S battery, Zn-ion battery, solid-state battery, or metal-air battery.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Job Duties:
  • Conduct experiments, gather data, document research notes, code and analyze data, interpret data.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publications in a timely manner and talks and posters for presentation at group meetings and conferences. Assist with reporting of research progress to funding agencies.
  • Keep up with historical and latest research data and publications.
  • Train students and other junior colleagues.
  • Stay up-to-date with all trainings, and federal, state, university and department requirements.
