The Center for Human Nutrition

The science of nutrition helps improve quality of life. Nutrition offers methods that not only treat, but also prevent illness. The mission of a faculty in the Center for Human Nutrition at UT Southwestern is to understand the study of abnormal metabolism and to draw out the contributions of nutrition and genetics in human beings. The study of human nutrition at UT Southwestern is divided into three areas of concentration: the cause, the prevention, and the treatment of disease in humans. Research in human nutrition involves direct patient interaction as well as basic laboratory investigations with patient samples. All research carried out through the Center seeks extraordinary scientific discovery to promote healthy living.

Job Summary

The Department of Human Nutrition is seeking to hire a Research Associate. We are committed to advancing the field of biomedical research through our cutting-edge research and innovative solutions that is directly translatable to patient care. Our lab studies liver metabolism utilizing ex vivo perfusion, stable isotope tracer methods and analytical chemistry tools The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills for interpreting results and facilitating dissemination through publications, presentations, and internal reports. Must also be organized and keep an eye on consumables and when we need to order them for research purposes.

Experience and Education
  • Masters degree with major coursework in field of assignment and three (3) years of laboratory experience including at least two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years of laboratory experience including two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.
Job Duties
  • Recommends and/or initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.
  • Performs computer programming for accumulation and analysis of research data.
  • Designs, constructs, repairs, or modifies electronic and/or mechanical equipment or apparatus used in experiments and research projects. Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, or other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.
  • Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.
  • May provide working supervision to employees of lower grade engaged in performance of variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
