Job Summary

A full-time position is open in the laboratory of Dr. Lenette Lu at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The Lu lab focuses on understanding how antibodies mediate the interface of host and microbe during infection and disease, with an emphasis on Mycobacterium tuberculosis which infects one quarter of the world's population. The individual will use techniques spanning molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, immunology, and glycobiology to define antibody responses from patient samples and dissect mechanisms of protection and disease in vitro with macrophages and other immune cells and in vivo with mouse models. The expectation is that the individual will be able to follow established protocols, develop new techniques, logically address technical problems, methodically present results, consult scientific literature, maintain well documented lab records, and ultimately design independent experiments.

Laboratory Expectations

• Designs, plans, coordinates, supervises, and carries out research projects in BSL 1, 2 and 3 settings with human patient samples, cell lines and mice.

• Learn to and build new techniques and procedures.

• Assembles and analyzes data.

• Creates figures and presentations.

• Assists in manuscript writing and revision.

• Coordinates projects with collaborators.

• Gives presentations of the work.

• Supervises and train students.

• Manages inventory and ordering.

• Assists in lab management in terms of facility and instrument care, scheduling, maintenance.

Experience and Education

• Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and three (3) years of laboratory experience including at least two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent. or

• Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and four (4) years of laboratory experience including two years at level of Research Assistant II or equivalent.

Job Duties

• Recommends and/or initiates new or modified procedures and techniques based upon latest developments in assigned field or analysis of research data.

• Performs computer programming for accumulation and analysis of research data.

• Designs, constructs, repairs, or modifies electronic and/or mechanical equipment or apparatus used in experiments and research projects.

• Instructs medical students, graduate students, residents, or other laboratory personnel of lower grade with respect to techniques, procedures, and equipment utilized in research or experiments.

• Assists principal investigator and other professional personnel in writing of reports and papers for publication.

• May provide working supervision to employees of lower grade engaged in performance of variety of difficult and complex laboratory work tasks.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
