The Department of Biology, at the University of Virginia, is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko. The individual will join a well-established research program aimed at molecular breeding of legumes for sub-Saharan Africa. Prior training and experience in plant genetics and molecular breeding, and basic plant functional genomics is required.

QUALIFICATIONS : Completion of a Ph.D. in plant breeding, plant genetics , plant molecular biology, or related field and clear demonstration of expertise in molecular breeding through published works by the start date.

Anticipated skills necessary would include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Ability to perform genetic crosses and develop new populations for selected traits; ability to maintain existing seed inventory.
  • Ability to perform routine molecular biological experiments including DNA extractions, PCR amplicon analysis, genotyping using various molecular marker technologies (e.g,, SSRs, SNPs, etc); development and use of allele-specific SNP markers.
  • Working understanding of basic bioinformatics and computational software for single trait and QTL mapping in biparental and advanced intercross populations for key biotic and abiotic constraints (e.g., Infinium iSelect SNP arrays, KASP platforms, GWAS or alternative genotyping methods)
  • Provide supervision and training for undergraduate students, visiting doctoral students and postdoctoral associates and scholars
