The Institutional Research Data Analyst supports the data and analytic functions of the office and collects, analyzes, synthesizes, and presents institutional and external data related to academic program planning, student success, operational efficacy, strategic planning, and other factors that impact UTC funding and reporting requirements for both internal and external audiences. The position manages databases, directs reporting activities, and develops venues for communicating information needed for planning and management of the University, and to meet UTC's external reporting obligations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Statistical Analysis and Data Request

Manages the design, maintenance, and manipulation of queries within relational databases and information systems to meet the needs of the University for data-informed decision making and program planning; selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results consistent with broadly defined policies, procedures, practices, and professional standards; validates student, financial, and HR data for required reporting responsibilities and use within OPEIR; conducts market analyses and predictive data analyses, illustrates and interprets trends, and provides information in a logical and contextual manner for enhanced understanding; serves as a consultant to faculty, staff, and administrators to create and promote a culture of data-driven management excellence; responsible for overseeing the completion of all federal IPEDS reporting; executes completion of external directory reporting; and completes ad-hoc requests as necessary.

State and UT System Reporting

Assists with the data transmittal process to UT System and THEC; assists with data verification in the production and frozen tables; works in a collaborative and time sensitive environment to correct data errors; and stays abreast of legislative changes to prepare for urgent State initiatives requests.

Data Transparency

Develops and maintains dynamic dashboards of up-to-date student, faculty, and financial data for the University; maintains University Factbook and other Web pages for OPEIR; stays up to date on technology changes and improvements to data visualization and reporting tools; and attends regular training for website development and data visualization.

Maintains documentation for process management within Institutional Research area; collaborates with Academic Affairs Project Manager to refine processes and procedures; and participates in committees and working groups as directed.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in data collection, cleaning, and management.
  • Excellent math skills including knowledge of descriptive statistics.
  • Expert knowledge of statistical software and data visualization tools (SPSS, Tableau, Power BI, SAS), and survey software (Qualtrics).
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively through excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exemplar interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Strong analytic skills with high attention to detail, data quality, and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn new skills quickly is essential.
  • Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Access, Excel, Visio, and Outlook.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Skilled in working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a varied community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and three years of work experience in post-secondary administration or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; and experience with statistical data analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Psychology, Statistics, or Higher Education and five years of work experience in post-secondary administration; advanced expertise in statistical data analysis, predictive modeling, and planning; high level of experience using statistical software packages (SPSS) and database management (Banner, Argos, SAP); and experience managing data quality processes and project management.
