GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

We are seeking a Research Engineer in the Traverso lab at Brigham and Women's Hospital with a background in material science and biomedical engineering. Our research group consists of chemists, biologists, engineers, pharmaceutical scientists, and physicians and focuses on developing clinically relevant solutions to a host of challenges such as infectious diseases, metabolic diseases, and cancer.

The student will contribute towards developing biomaterials that will be used for cell transplantation and nucleic acid delivery. The candidate will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of highly exciting research areas of cell therapy, mRNA therapy, and nanotechnology. The candidate will work closely with senior scientists who are experts in the areas of drug delivery and material design, and hence will have the opportunity to train in these areas. The primary responsibilities of the candidate include materials synthesis and physicochemical characterization, in vitro testing of materials on cells/tissues and in vivo analyses in small and large animals.

Qualifications

The candidate should possess B.S./M.S. or equivalent in biomedical engineering, material science, chemical engineering, bioengineering or a related field. An ideal candidate will have research background in drug delivery. The ideal candidate will have experience in at least 2 of the areas listed below.

  • Synthesis of polymers and/or hydrogels, and their physicochemical characterization using techniques such as NMR, GPC
  • Mammalian cell culture
  • General biological characterization techniques such as flow cytometry, PCR, western blotting, microscopy
  • Formulation development (such as nanoparticles and microparticles) and characterization techniques such as dynamic light scattering (DLS)/ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) etc.


Training to gain further skills will be available.
