Works under the very general direction of the Principal Investigator or Department Administrator, performs full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including fiscal/budget management, supervision of staff activities, inventory management, etc. Independently performs highly sophisticated experiments. Participates with the principal investigator in the design of experimental protocols. Interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers.

  • Supervises operation of the laboratory, including overseeing the use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities.
  • Manages all lab personnel, including hiring, firing, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, orientation, and training.
  • Responsible for financial management of research lab. Develops budgets, analyzes trends, produces reports. Additionally participates in all aspects of grant writing and proposals.
  • Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab.
  • Reports on work in progress at weekly seminars and interprets experiment results in conference with other researchers.
  • Carries out independent research projects, which involve the execution of highly, sophisticated techniques.
  • Contributes to scientific literature and may present the results at hospital and outside meetings.
  • Trains staff in specialized lab techniques.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • BS Required, MS preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.
  • Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects.
  • Must have aptitude for technical problem solving.
  • Ability to effectively supervise others.
  • Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research.
  • Must possess aptitude for budget management.
  • High level of computer literacy
