Job Summary

A successful applicant for this position will assist in and carry out research projects on HIV-1 assembly. The applicant will consult primary literature, design and execute experiments, and evaluate and communicate the results. Experimental procedures to be performed include (but are not limited to): biochemical procedures including protein purification, liposome binding assays, and protein-RNA binding assays; immunological procedures including Western blotting, ELISA, and radioimmunoprecipitation; molecular biology procedures including DNA cloning, PCR, and plasmid prep; mammalian cell cultures including HIV-infected primary cell cultures. The individual will participate and present in lab meetings related to the progress of the project(s). Additionally, the individual will carry out ordering, monitoring and maintenance of laboratory safety (including chemical and radioactive material safety), laboratory record keeping, and routine lab maintenance (common reagents and instruments).

Responsibilities*

The candidate will work as part of a team participating in basic science/applied bench research using a combination of cellular and molecular biological approaches including HIV-1 research. It is expected that the applicant will have knowledge and skill in:
  • Data logs, reagent ordering, general lab maintenance (waste disposal, cleaning), and overall smooth functioning of laboratory.
  • Analyzing data using Microsoft office, ImageJ, GraphPad and FlowJo.
  • Cell culture techniques (maintaining established cell lines, cell transfection, isolating primary cells from the blood).
  • Conducting flow cytometry, western blotting, ELISA.
  • Infection experiments with HIV-1.

The applicant would be expected to demonstrate proficiency in these techniques within the first 2 months of hire.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of related research experience.
  • Applicant must be hard working, highly motivated, well organized, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Applicant must have effective judgment and problem-solving skills, an ability to work as a team member with a wide variety of co-workers, efficient multi-tasking skills, and meticulous attention to detail.

Additional Information

This is a 1-year initial term appointment. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
