Summary

The Center for Nursing Research and Quality Outcomes supports all clinical nurses and patient care service line staff who are conducting research, QI and EBP projects. The Research Nurse Specialist is involved with many aspects of research coordination within the Division of Nursing/Patient Care Services. S/he serves as a resource for staff initiating research studies and facilitates the progress of research from conception to closeout including dissemination of results. The Research Nurse Specialist is the first point of contact within the MMC's/Patient Care Services research infrastructure and guides the staff investigator throughout the lifecycle of a protocol. The individual helps staff investigators navigate the complex administrative and regulatory requirements. The Research Nurse Specialist also provides ongoing assistance with protocol amendments and study closeout.

The Research Nurse Specialist is the primary resource, providing personalized, expert assistance to staff members at MMC/Patient Care Services. S/he assists with IRB application and submission, development of study design, data management & analysis. The individual also helps resolve problems, identifies resources for successful completion of projects, refers staff investigators to appropriate research services and tools, promotes institutional polices and best practices, and responds to queries. S/he knows who to contact and where to seek answers when staff investigators have questions about preparing proposals, abstract and manuscript writing and submissions. The individual identifies, develops, and maintains relationships with key contacts within the organization in order to facilitate the timely initiation of new projects. S/he is tracking the progress of research, quality improvement, evidence-based practice projects and dissemination of results.

The incumbent reports to and collaborates with the Director Center of Nursing Research and Quality Outcomes, the Principle Investigator, and relevant MMC Departments. The primary responsibilities include study coordination and acting as a hospital resource/educator person for studies.

Position Summary
  • The Research Nurse Specialist position involves many aspects of research coordination with the Division of Nursing. The incumbent reports to and collaborates with the Director Center of Nursing Research and Quality Outcomes, the Principle Investigator, and relevant MMC Departments. The primary responsibilities include study coordination and acting as a hospital educator/resource person for studies.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Education: PhD required.
  • License/Certifications: Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maine.
  • Experience: Thorough knowledge of theory, practice, principles, processes and issues of nursing usually acquired through 2-3 years of clinical experience.
  • Knowledge of current Research related policies and procedures as well as appropriate process for initiating revisions.
  • Analytical ability necessary to keep records, maintain inventory levels and perform data entry.
  • Ability to manage complex projects through all phases of development, implementation, and follow-up.
