Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in plant breeding and genetics is preferred
  • Experience with day-to-day activities in cotton breeding research
  • Experience in statistical analysis using SAS, JUMP and R software
  • Experience in performing DNA extraction and PCR amplification


Position Summary

This position will perform activities relating to day-to-day operation in the cotton breeding program by supporting principal investigator, graduate students and Postdocs in data collection and performing basic ANOVA data analysis on yield and fiber quality data.

*This is a grant funded position and the possibility of renewal of this position for subsequent years will depend on the availability of funds.*

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Ability to independently conduct greenhouse and small plots research
  • Operate a tractor and seed planter for small research plots
  • Gin and de-lint cotton seeds
  • Operate a research cotton picker with load-cells for yield data acquisition
  • Operate unmanned aircraft (drone)


Physical Demands
  • Work outdoors in hot and humid conditions
  • Work in confined space such as inside the cabin of a tractor and cotton picker
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.

Cotton Research
  • Conduct field plot research including ginning and de-linting cotton seeds, packaging seeds, planting and harvesting, weighing samples, etc.
  • Manage cotton plots during field season including cutting alleys, spraying insecticides/herbicides, irrigation, etc.
  • Coordinate with farm managers on activities such as irrigation, fertilizer application etc.
  • Maintain research equipment such as tractors and sprayers
