This role is for the McClung Lab at the University of Pittsburgh. The McClung Lab's research focuses on the role of circadian rhythms in the development and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Our work has utilized rodent models, cell culture work, and human tissue to define the mechanisms by which circadian genes regulate neuronal circuitry, mood, reward, motivation, anxiety, and other constructs associated with psychiatric disorders.

The ideal candidate has prior academic/industry research experience in a basic laboratory setting and has a strong understanding of cellular and molecular biology concepts and techniques. They have a strong interest in advancing their knowledge and skills in research techniques and methodology and show a willingness and excitement for getting involved in research projects. The candidate is highly self-motivated and able to work independently with little supervision. Being highly organized and maintaining focus is key to the success of this role when performing repetitive tasks. They should have exemplary communication and social skills that allow them to work effectively with many different types of people from different backgrounds. The candidate can demonstrate strong logic and critical thinking skills allowing them to adapt to a dynamic research environment and come up with creative solutions to unique problems.

This position is grant funded.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintenance and direct oversight of the lab's animal colonies
  • Genotyping of research animals
  • Working closely with the CARRS study team to assist in behavioral experiments
  • Act as a resource to graduate students and postdoctoral associates to aid in carrying out experiments
  • Assisting the research staff in updating and maintaining the lab's website
  • Work with the lab manager to organize and maintain the lab space
  • Help with placing orders for the lab, taking regular inventory, and notifying the lab manager when consumables are running low
  • Perform additional tasks/projects assigned by the lab manager or the principal investigator


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cell/Molecular Biology, Sociology or related research field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required. Experience in a biological science setting preferred.
  • Direct, hands on experience with PCR/qPCR or other standard molecular biology techniques highly preferred
  • Experience handling small animals, namely mice or rats in a research setting highly preferred
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
