Job Summary

Screen, recruit, enroll and retain clinical research study participants for NIH and non-federal clinical trials, observational studies. Schedule, conduct and provide detailed documentation of all research study visits for all study participants including obtaining written informed consent. Provide extensive documentation for all of the aforementioned duties. Write and submit clinical research protocols including informed consent forms to our IRB. Design and submit clinical research budgets as part of the package to the UTSW site review team that governs the implementation of a study on our campus. Monitor clinical trial participant progress, revise IRB protocols, and respond to queries from the IRB and rom coordinating centers that oversee observational studies and clinical trials.

Experience and Education

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate of NLN (National League for Nursing) approved Nursing program, licensure as Registered Nurse by Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas is required.
  • A Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field is required.
  • Six years clinical nursing experience required, out of which, three years' experience in research nursing is required and at least one year as a formal mentor or equivalent role.
  • Clinical research nursing experience may be substituted for relevant clinical research experience on one-on-one basis.
  • Certification(s) Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through a course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required.
  • CCRC/CCRP (or equivalent) professional certification is highly preferred.
Job Duties

Study and Subject Management:
  • Oversees execution of a portfolio of clinical research studies within a department/division/center.
  • Responsible for overseeing nursing care provided to research subjects within the disease team/division/department/center.
  • Responsible for timely activation and execution of all studies to meet study milestones and division/department/center research goals.
  • Assists the teams or department/division/center in design, development, and implementation of activities, policies, and procedures for quality assurance standards to ensure safety of study subjects.
  • May recommend solutions to improve the overall operations, and the safe and efficient conduct of clinical trials.
  • May develop, implement and/or standardize procedures for inpatient and outpatient research activities of the division/department/center.
  • May administer experimental and non-experimental medications, interventions and/or procedures within the scope of practice and under physician/principal investigator guidance.
Data & Regulatory Management:
  • Manage operations responsible for clinical research data collection for pharmaceutical studies, Federal studies, or investigator-initiated studies in patient records (paper and electronic), sponsors documents (electronic and paper) and other forms for data collection, such as: medical histories, data collection of patients' charts for retrospective review studies, patient physiologic performance results and laboratory determinations, calculations of derived information, and maintenance of general research protocols and complex protocols.
  • Prepare reports or study summaries for physicians and granting agencies.
  • Monitor guidelines and policy updates, and oversees all aspects related to compliance with study protocol and regulatory agencies policies governing human subjects research.
Personnel Management:
  • Research RN Team Lead will supervise research nurses and coordinators for multiple studies.
  • Responsible for staff oversight, recruitment and evaluation, work assignment, and mentors professional development of staff.
  • Leads committees or task forces to address and resolve significant operational issues.
  • Provides supervision and working direction for research activities to nursing staff and/or other non-licensed medical or research support personnel.
  • Resolves problems relating to clinical research protocols, study subject's clinical care and acts as a liaison between the research team and other institutional stakeholders.
  • Sets annual goals and oversees performance appraisal of the assigned research teams
Financial Management:

May be responsible for preparing study budgets and oversees expenditures per budgetary and granting agency guidelines May assist in day-to-day operations and budgeting of research operations, including staff, studies, and research activities of the clinical research units. May be responsible for interacting with sponsored program administration, revenue cycle, office of institutional compliance, internal audit, and other stake holders in implementing financial controls as it relates to billing and accounting of clinical research activities Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Work requires use of considerable judgment in application of procedures, nursing assessment techniques, practices, and policies to work problems, organization, and administration of research or outpatient clinic. Work requires frequent contact with physicians, residents, fellows, allied health personnel, affiliated institutions, and other medical and/or non-medical office support personnel to facilitate patient care and research data collection. Work requires the determination of methods or approaches to work problems.
