The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine and features an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center. Through collaborations with the O'Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.

Job Summary and Preferred Qualifications

The lab of Dr. Nancy Monson , in the Department of Neurology, is seeking an outstanding candidate to fill a post-doctoral Research Scientist position working in the field of cellular and molecular neuroimmunology. The successful candidate will be a part of an interdisciplinary team discovering new mechanisms of immune-mediated neuroprotection that are being developed for therapeutic use. Dr. Monson is highly invested in the career development of early career scientists. Ideal candidates would meet the following criteria:

• Must have a PhD or equivalent degree with a background in immunology, cellular and molecular biology, or neuroscience.

• Must be the first author on at least 1-2 publications.

• Must have prior experience in cell culture, immunofluorescence staining of tissue and microscopic imaging.

• Analysis of immune cells and responses in animal models using flow cytometry, behavior testing, and molecular biological techniques is desired.

• The ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is a definite advantage .

Experience and Education

• Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least two (2) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. or

• Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and seven (7) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least three (3) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. or

• Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and nine (9) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least four (4) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent.

Job Duties

• Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, and personally participates in assigned scientific or medical research projects. Selects or assists in selection of key research personnel. Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained and assigns and reviews work of subordinates. Plans experimental protocols.

• Reviews and analyzes resulting research data. Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data.

• Compiles, writes, and submits research results to supervisor. Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors.

• Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results.

• Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures.

• May confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
