Description: Job Summary:

The Vaccine Study Center within the Division of Research of The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. (Kaiser Permanente Northern California) seeks to recruit a doctoral level biostatistician at the early or mid-career level (assistant or associate professor equivalent). This full-time position is similar to a faculty position in an academic research institution. Responsibilities will include providing expertise in vaccine study design and statistical methods, contributing to proposals and manuscripts writing and guiding master's level analysts. The position also provides opportunities to lead independent statistical or applied research.

The candidate must have: (i) a Ph.D. in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field, (ii) demonstrated expertise in statistical methods, (iii) demonstrated history of successful collaboration and consultation, (iv) a track record of peer-reviewed scholarly publications, and (v) excellent oral and written skills. Candidates with experience or strong interests in vaccine effectiveness and safety research are particularly encouraged to apply.

Embedded within the Division of Research, the Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Study Center (KPVSC) is a leader in evaluating vaccines with a long history of collaboration with multiple federal agencies, particularly the CDC's Immunization Safety Office. The KPVSC has also been engaged in Phase II, III, and IV vaccine trials, collaborating with the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA to help bring new vaccines into licensure and then to evaluate and ensure their safety. Most recently, the KPVSC was instrumental in all aspects regarding COVID-19 vaccines: conducting clinical trials prior to authorization, monitoring their safety after widespread use, and assessing their effectiveness through national collaborative research projects. Additionally, KPVSC has played a critical role in monitoring the safety and effectiveness of other vaccines, including influenza, pertussis, measles, respiratory syncytial virus, shingles, and pneumococcal vaccines. Currently, KPVSC has a team of over 40 individuals, including 3 MD/PhD-level investigators, programmer analysts, project managers, research assistants, nurses, and physicians. We are currently seeking an experienced biostatistician to provide high-level analytic and statistical support for a portfolio of studies focused on vaccine research

Serves as principal biostatistician on major projects. Directs lower level statisticians/investigators and programmer/analysts.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Designs, develops, obtains funding, and directs research for major projects. Mentors/supervises junior level research scientists and technical staff. Provides consultation and data interpretation to TPMG, KFH/P managers and committees. Provides consultation and direction to programmer analysts with regard to data management and analysis strategies.

  • Participates in preparation of grant proposals, internal reports and publication, independently and collaboratively. Masters new statistical methods as they are presented in the relevant literature and disseminates this knowledge to other staff. Develops and publishes new statistical methods and applications, independently or collaboratively. Serves on various committees.

  • Provides service to the scientific community through membership on peer review groups and national boards. Consults with local, state and national voluntary and governmental agencies. May serve as member of state/national study review panels. Presents papers at national scientific meetings; teaches and/or reviews papers for national journals. Evaluates and consults on research proposals of others.

  • Kaiser Permanente conducts compensation reviews of positions on a routine basis. Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Minimum seven (7) years of professional experience in conducting original research and publishing peer-reviewed results (analogous to academic series - Associate Professor).

Education

  • Doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics or related field, OR eight (8) years of experience in a directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Competent in advanced statistical/research techniques, and study designs commonly used in epidemiological and health services research.

  • Ability to creatively apply techniques and/or develop new statistical/research methods.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as principal biostatistician on at least one major project.
