JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Research Specialist prepares Next Gen Sequencing samples to be processed and run on the Illumina NextSeq and Element AVITI. This position is responsible for the operation of the Hamilton Star Systems Robot in making Next Gen Sequencing libraries and investigating and troubleshooting the implementation of new Next Gen Sequencing technologies.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Processes and prepares RNA/DNA libraries for Next Gen Sequencing samples for producing reliable and reproducible data for investigators.
  2. Set up, run, and troubleshoot coding and maintain Hamilton Star Robot.
  3. Assists in setting up other instrumentation provided by MRC.
  4. Consults with investigators on experimental design and planning of experiments and results/data analysis for Next Gen Sequencing.
  5. Assists and teaches investigators the process of using and scheduling equipment provided by MRC for optimal utilization for research projects.
  6. Performs other job duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree inGenetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or one of the Life Sciences. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of laboratory experience; OR Master's Degree inGenetics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology and two (2) years of laboratory experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and skills in sample processing for Next Gen Sequencing.
  • Knowledge and skills to carry out various molecular experimental procedures using established protocols to produce technically reproducible data and the ability to adapt to and learn new protocols and write new SOPs.
  • Knowledge of the molecular techniques and the equipment provided as services for investigators to use.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and understand the experimental needs of a diverse clientele.
  • Skills to interpret QC data on samples for Next Gen sequencing and be ability to communicate to investigators how to resolve problems associated with poor-quality samples.
  • Ability to be flexible, prioritize jobs, have good time management skills, and work independently to meet project timelines to support grant and publication submissions by core users.
  • Knowledge and skills at working with computers and various software including Microsoft Office, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet searches.
  • Ability to learn new software related to servers and data analysis.


WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings. May occasionally require overnight travel.
