Position Summary
The Baiz lab at the University at Buffalo, SUNY seeks a Research Technician to assist with research operations in the areas of speciation/hybridization, symbiosis and microbial ecology. Core projects involve bird-microbe-mite interactions, examined through the lens of evolutionary biology.

This is an in-person, full-time, benefits-eligible position. The candidate will oversee laboratory operations, assist with experiments, data collection, data management, and field work.

Specific tasks include:
  • attending weekly lab meetings;
  • ensuring that the lab is stocked with necessary supplies and placing orders as needed;
  • maintaining databases of samples, reagents, data, etc.;
  • running DNA extractions/PCRs/gels for various projects;
  • optimizing/troubleshooting specific protocols;
  • maintaining microbial cultures in the laboratory;
  • assisting grad students/postdocs with sample collection/field work.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education in a specific field and one year of relevant research or program experience.
  • Experience in a laboratory environment
  • Working knowledge of typical tests or procedures relative to the field and must have familiarity with the operation of specialized apparatuses or equipment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have wet lab experience and an interest in learning different protocols and procedures for microbial culture and next-generation sequencing approaches.
  • A self-starter attitude
  • Desirable qualities would be some familiarity with principles in ecology & evolutionary biology, as well as wet lab techniques (e.g., PCR , agarose gel electrophoresis), and coding for data analysis.

Physical Demands
Salary Range $40,000
