Research Technician II, Patwardhan Laboratory

UT Southwestern Medical Center - Anesthesiology and Pain Management Department has an opening for a Research Technician II. In this position you will work under Principal Investigator, Amol Patwardhan, MD, and his research team to participate in clinical outcomes research that is focused on best understanding human pain and consequent sequelae in surgical patients undergoing lower back pain surgery. The primary focus is observing the management and behavior of pain in animals and its surgical outcomes in human subjects.

Job Summary

The ideal applicant should enjoy assisting with animal (behavioral) experiments, laboratory experiments, and interpretation of data acquired. Position is fast-paced and requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and daily communication of project tasks, project completions, and presentations of work is important. Participating and presenting in Journal clubs is highly encouraged. Additional tasks will be assigned by supervisor and post-doctorate researchers to assist in maintaining chemical inventory, laboratory supply inventory, ordering supplies, and budgeting expenses. Tasks assigned are based on laboratory and research needs. The applicant should be positive and adaptable. The applicant should have strong organizational skills and be able to multi-task, prioritize and communicate well with Dr. Patwardhan and other research team members, study subjects and the broader clinical and research community.

The applicant should enjoy interfacing with patients to explain the research study and to consent and enroll patients who wish to participate in the study. The applicant should expect to perform patient biosamples during patient surgery after patient study enrollments. Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

The applicant should be familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams). Other responsibilities will include assistance with document creation, meeting, and team coordination, reviewing the patient's medical records, ability to accurately abstract data, and enter data into study databases immediately.

• Experience with Microscopy and data analysis.

• Previous experience with animal research is a plus

• Experiences in utilizing EMR (Epic), Medical knowledge/Scribing, REDCap or other databases, and performing human subject research are all a plus

Experience and Education

• Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required.

• Two (2) years of college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.

• High school graduation or GED and four (4) years of laboratory experience including two years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.

Job Duties

• Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.

• Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.

• Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.

• Assists in collection of data for project reports.

• Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.

• May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
