Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology at UT Southwestern focuses on conducting basic and translational research in infectious diseases and training graduate students, medical students, physician scientists, and postdoctoral fellows. The department's goals are to provide and continue to develop a rich environment of interdisciplinary research excellence within a highly collaborative atmosphere for faculty and students.

Job Summary

The Dr. John Schoggins Lab is seeking to hire a Research Technician II. The Schoggins Lab studies innate immunity at the virus-host interface. We use virological, genetic, and biochemical approaches to identify and characterize mechanisms that mammalian hosts use to control viral infection and virus-induced diseases.

The successful candidate will perform mouse work, including colony/colony database management, weaning and genotyping of mice, and minor procedures. Additionally, this person will manage supplies, stock, and reorder for mouse-related duties. Tissue/cell culture maintenance and performing viral infection assays in cell culture using BSL2 practices will also be required.

A Bachelor's degree with major coursework in Biology, Microbiology, or Zoology is preferred,

Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required OR
  • Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent OR
  • High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Job Duties
  • Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
  • Assists in collection of data for project reports.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
