Department of Molecular Genetics

The Department of Molecular Genetics applies powerful tools of molecular biology to problems of clinical medicine with heavy emphasis on genetic and metabolic disorders. Job Summary

The Drs. Joseph L. Goldstein and Michael S. Brown Lab is seeking a Research Technician II. Our laboratory discovered the SREBPs and described their unique transport-dependent proteolytic activation. We then discovered SCAP the two proteases that process SREBPs, and the role of Insigs as ER retention proteins. We are exploring the molecular mechanisms by which cholesterol, fatty acids, and insulin control this process. We use experimental systems ranging from protein crystallography to cell biology to animal physiology. Over the years we have trained more than 20 graduate students and 100 postdoctoral fellows, all of whom are pursuing productive careers in biomedical research.

This position will report directly to Dr. Jing Tian.

This Research Technician II will be responsible for assisting with the handling and experimental manipulation of various small animal species. This individual will assist in standard molecular cloning such as recombinant DNA, protein expression and purification, as well as tissue culture experiments. Prefer applicant with previous work experience with small animals.
  • Hours for this position are 8:00am - 4:30pm firm.
  • Must be willing to work with animals (rodents mainly).
  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology assays helpful (SDS-PAGE, DNA/RNA isolation).
Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required. or
  • Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent. or
  • High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Job Duties
  • Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science areas such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
  • Assists in collection of data for project reports.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
