The Leclerc Laboratory at the University of Virginia, Department of Anesthesiology, seeks applications for a Research Technician or Lab Specialist .

The Leclerc Lab focuses on elucidating the mechanisms for the clearance of neurotoxic metabolites from the brain following hemorrhagic stroke. Normally, blood is not present within the brain aside from that which is contained within the vasculature. When bleeding occurs , red blood cells become unstable and release a myriad of neurotoxic molecules. The glymphatic pathway is a special clearance pathway within the brain that facilitates bulk flow washout of molecules to the periphery . This research focuses on how various anesthetic agents interact with the glymphatic pathway to facilitate the clearance of neurotoxic metabolites after hemorrhagic stroke .

The experiments proposed utilize cutting-edge in vivo and in vitro techniques and represent a unique research niche that bridges the fields of Anesthesiology and Neuroscience . This position will require the ability to perform both routine lab functions as well as more advanced neuroscience procedures and protocols . Routine lab functions may include managing the mouse colony, genotyping, making solutions, ordering lab supplies , maintaining inventor ies , and organizing and maintaining records and lab SOPs. Advanced neuroscience procedures may include performing stereotaxic surgery on mice , two photon microscopy , administering pharmaceutical agents to mice, neuro-behavioral monitoring of mice, and performing histology , western blotting, and other forms of microscopy. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This position will report to the Principal Investigator (PI). All team members meet individually with the PI at least weekly to summarize their progress and troubleshoot their projects. They will also work closely with other team members within the Department of Neuroscience.

Applicants will be considered for a Lab and Research Technician 1 or 2 or a Lab Specialist position, based on the degree of their prior education and laboratory experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of laboratory research and/or surgical experience working with mice or other small animals, to include experience gained as a student ( bachelor's degree will be considered in lieu of experience)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word , Excel , and PowerPoint
  • C omfortable learning various computer software systems and manipulating, computing, and analyzing data to include mathematical calculations , sta ti stical analyses and data presentation
  • Excellent organizational and timeline management skills
  • Able to perform library and literature searches
  • Work effectively with medical and undergraduate students to guide projects and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions
  • Have strong ability to work independently and function well as part of a team
  • Comfortable handling rodents
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or higher degree, particularly if in neuroscience and/or pharmacology or related field of study
  • Over 3 years of laboratory experience , with particular emphasis on significant experience working with rodents
  • Interest in basic neuroscience, stroke, and/or anesthesiology research
  • Experience with two-photon microscopy and cranial windows in mice
  • Experience with stereotactic surgery in mice
  • Experience with neurobehavioral monitoring in mice

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation .
