About the College/Unit/Department

The University of Georgia's Skidaway Institute of Oceanography (SkIO) is a multidisciplinary research and training institution located on a 700-acre campus on Skidaway Island. The Institute's primary goals are to further understanding of marine and environmental sciences, conduct leading edge research on marine and coastal systems, and train tomorrow's scientists. Our campus is also a host to Georgia Southern University's Applied Coastal Research Lab, NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary, The University of Georgia's Marine Education Center and Aquarium, and The Nature Conservancy. Skidaway Institute of Oceanography is also home to the Research Vessel (R/V) Savannah. The R/V Savannah is owned and operated by the Institute and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and Academic Research Fleet (ARF).

Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in the Geosciences.
  • Experience in hands-on field sampling.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS.


Position Summary

This professional individual is responsible for the performance of field and/or laboratory tasks associated with coastal and marine geological and environmental research. Utilizes solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with geological studies and Dr. Clark Alexander's research program within the broader context of the Institute's research. This employee may also assist, in conjunction with a research professional or faculty member, with the daily supervision and instruction of students. Once trained on existing lab protocols and techniques, position works with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to operate in a variety of conditions, climate controlled and outdoor environments.
  • Knowledge of general and geological laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain and keep records and to organize data in preparation of records and reports. Effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to understand and interpret information.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, staff, and supervisors.

  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods.
  • May go out to sea and collect samples on large and small vessels in coastal and marine environments.
  • Lift/transport up to 40 pounds.

  • Preparation and laboratory analysis of geological samples.
  • Perform technical field and/or laboratory tasks as needed for marine, coastal, and environmental research projects, following accepted institution safety practices.
  • Assemble and maintain stocks of required equipment and supplies, under supervision of faculty or other research staff.
  • Follow standardized research protocols with minimal supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned and appropriate.
