In the Division of Construction, under the general direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the incumbent serves as a Resident Engineer (RE) over a construction project and is responsible for the engineering integrity. The incumbent administers major and minor construction projects ensuring contract compliance and acts within the authority of the State Contract Act, the "Engineer's Authority" of the Standard Specifications, the Caltrans Construction Manual and any other applicable administrative instructions.

Under the technical direction of a Professional Engineer, the incumbent serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE). This position assists the Resident Engineer as the state representative on one or more construction projects to ensure the performance of assigned work complies with the current requirements of Standard Plans, Standard Specifications, and Standard Special Provisions.

Under general direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the incumbent serves as the Office Engineer (OE). This position assists the Resident Engineer with difficult contract administration activities at a field office. This includes preparing, maintaining complete and accurate documentation regarding construction contracts and projects.

After successful completion of a one year probation, the new state candidate will be required to enroll in the Caltrans Transportation Engineer Rotation Program, which includes rotating to other divisions for up to two years in the Oakland District Office. Throughout employment with the division, employees may be required to work at night and/or weekends; may be transferred to work at another construction field office; or may be re-assigned to work for another senior engineer on a different project.

Positions available in ALAMEDA, CONTRA COSTA, MARIN, SAN MATEO, SANTA CLARA, SOLANO and SONOMA counties.

Candidates are required to review the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) for this classification. If you meet MQs under Pattern II and require the TE Civil in-person written hurdle exam, DO NOT TAKE the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle. Candidates who take the TE Civil online exam prior to passing the written hurdle may negatively impact their hiring eligibility. Working Conditions

Positions located in either (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma) County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

While at their base of operation, employee will work in a climate-controlled field office under artificial light. The Senior Transportation Engineer will set working hours. Overtime and night work may be required, and vacations may be restricted, during peak times of the construction project. Employee may also be transferred to work at another construction field office or may be re-assigned to work for another senior and/or a different project due to operational need.

The RE and ARE will be exposed to loud noise, dust and extreme weather conditions at the project sites.

The Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program is a mandatory 24 month to 33 months rotation assignment for all permanent, full-time Transportation Engineer (Civil) employees that have completed their probationary period hired by Caltrans Districts after June 22, 2018, or an earlier date as determined by the Districts. The purpose of Rotation Program is to provide opportunities for employees and Caltrans to benefit by participating in a standardized process that systematically engages newly hired engineers. Participants will develop well-rounded project delivery knowledge, skills, and abilities by rotating through diverse project delivery functional units. The Rotation Program includes mandatory core assignments in Design and Construction units, as well as a mandatory elective assignment. Each rotation assignment is typically between 6 to 12 months and will be based on workload needs and the employee's goals. Assignments may involve long term travel and can be located throughout the state.

In addition to the Caltrans Transportation Engineer (Civil) Rotation Program, an incumbent may be required to go on loan to another project delivery function when there are temporary or peak staffing needs in those areas.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. For all other ranges, a PE license is not required.
