The Department of Criminal Justice Services is seeking a collaborative and innovative team player to serve as a full-time Resource Development and Communications Specialist in Richmond, Virginia. This position will assist members of the Division of Programs and Services, and particularly the staff of the Office of Safer Communities, to support state and local government entities, community-based nonprofits, local law enforcement, and other stakeholders. The priority for this position will be the work of the Office of Safer Communities. As time allows, this position will support the entire Division. This position will assist with editing, writing, and reviewing content, including coordinating information on the website. The position will support a variety of initiatives in content development and document proofing and editing. What you will do:
• Work independently and collaboratively to assist in the development of necessary resources and content associated with the duties and responsibilities of the Division.
• Work independently or collaboratively to develop materials to support nonprofit grantees and nonprofit organizations.
• With content provided largely by subject matter experts within or external to the Office of Safer Communities, and as time permits, the Division, prepare content for sharing on the website and through a variety of distribution means.
• Proofread content and provide editing suggestions for a variety of external and internal communication including grant solicitations, special conditions, annual reports, materials for posting on the website, PowerPoint presentations, and conference handouts.
• Review and edit training content.
• Draft and review content to facilitate learning and engagement in line with the initiatives and mission.
• Assist in the development and implementation of new resources through literature reviews, advisory committees, and coordination with consultants.
• Develop, revise, and update DCJS resources and support training initiatives as needed.
• Develop the Office of Safer Communities website content, including determining its organization, layout, content, and links to other organizations to enable DCJS to be a clearinghouse for violence prevention, intervention, and suppression initiatives, including firearms initiatives, across the Commonwealth and linking to best practices nationally.
• Review Division pages for readability, consistency, and content, and make recommendations for content.
• Post materials offered by colleagues in the Office to support the clearinghouse.
• Use web-based tools to update content for the Division's website.
• Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to develop clearinghouse and website content.
• Work collaboratively with DCJS colleagues to deliver clear, timely and error free communication in all forms to internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

What the ideal candidate must possess:
• Experience collecting, sourcing, and analyzing data and information and preparing reports and materials for dissemination.
• Experience drafting and reviewing presentations, reports, or other publications.
• Demonstrated skill and experience proofreading, editing, and formatting a variety of content for a variety of audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite to include but not limited to Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Access, etc., and/or Google Drive and the associated programs, Internet, and e-mail software.
• Ability to think strategically and cross culturally, and independently implement new initiatives and projects.
• Ability to articulate, both orally and in written form, clear and concise program objectives and goals and summarize achievements of programs in reports and other documents as requested.
• Documented experience working as an active, contributing team member, as well as an independent and self-motivated employee.
• Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, handle multiple assignments, changing priorities, and ensure timeliness and quality of completed assignments.

Additional Considerations

• Considerable experience in journalism, writing, or similar field.
• Experience or exposure to drafting/editing/updating training materials and supporting training initiatives.
• Ability to perform, lead, or supervise a wide variety of moderate to complex program and operational support duties.
• Experience developing and managing website content.
• Knowledge of criminal justice intervention and prevention work.

Special Instructions

Interview candidates may be required to demonstrate the skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory performance of work. The candidate selected for the position must successfully complete a criminal background investigation and complete and submit a Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) which will be entered into the Federal E-Verify system to confirm identity and work authorization. The individual may also be responsible for submitting an annual Statement of Personal Economic Interest. In addition, the selected candidate who begins original employment or re-employment in this position must serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment. The anticipated starting salary range is $54,000 to $64,000 plus the state's benefits package.
