Under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapist, the Respiratory Care Assistant examines patients with breathing-related conditions and conducts diagnostic testing. Performs physiotherapy and other treatments and teaches patients to use medications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Measures lung capacity and analyzes blood samples using a blood gas analyzer.
Delivers and assesses response to ordered therapy per plan of care. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate.
Evaluates respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices.
Responds to codes and calls for emergent assistance. Assesses patient condition and delivers appropriate treatment.
Educates the patient and family about the patient's illness and provides information about community support groups and other resources.
Monitors, receives, stocks, and distributes respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders.
Maintains storage areas with required supply levels and equipment.
Disassembles, cleans, and sterilizes equipment, and performs preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Listed with the NC Board of Respiratory Therapy as a Respiratory Care Assistant.
Respiratory Therapy students are eligible to apply for this position.
Acquire American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds.
Ability to see colors, see at least 1 mm squares.
Ability to hear and distinguish heart and lung sounds.
Ability to reach overhead.
Ability to remain calm, continue to function effectively and develop priorities during highly stressful situations.
Ability to communicate effectively using written and verbal media.
Ability to move and operate equipment and carry supplies.
