RF/Electrical Engineer

Upton, New York

Employer: Brookhaven National Laboratory
Industry: Engineer - Electrical
Salary: $78700 - $131750 per year
Job type: Full-Time

The Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD), part of Brookhaven's Advanced Technology Research Office, operates the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), a DOE Office of Science User Facility supporting the Department of Energy's Accelerator Stewardship Program. The ATF offers access to qualified users to conduct research with its unique suite of capabilities that includes a high brightness electron beam, near infrared lasers, and unique long-wave infrared laser system. The AFD science and engineering team maintains an active R&D program that drives improvements to these capabilities to benefit the ATF user community.

In addition, AFD serves as a focal point for the laboratory's Accelerator Science and Technology (AS&T) efforts. These efforts focus on the development of advanced accelerator and laser concepts to support next generation accelerator capabilities that can address identified and emerging needs for scientific research, national security, industry, and medicine. The division is deploying a range of dedicated accelerator research space as part of the laboratory's AS&T Initiative that will enable collaborative research by scientific and industrial partners working to address these needs.

Position Description

The Accelerator Facilities Division (AFD) has an opening for an early career electrical engineer. The division operates multiple particle accelerators and laser systems along with a suite of specialized diagnostics. These systems utilize a range of radiofrequency (RF) systems, low and high voltage power supply systems (both DC and pulsed), data acquisition electronics, and machine protection systems. This position will provide an opportunity to gain experience in the operation and maintenance of existing accelerator and laser electrical systems, the design and implementation of new and/or upgraded systems, and interfacing with the facility control systems. It will involve engagement and coordination with AFD science, engineering, and technical team members, as well as external users, working on a range of advanced accelerator and laser techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and maintain existing accelerator and laser systems including radiofrequency (RF) systems, magnet systems, systems supporting laser operation, and machine protection systems.
  • Design and implement electrical and RF systems associated with planned facility upgrades.
  • Support user operations and integration of user-supplied electrical hardware.
  • Generate wiring and schematic diagrams and prepare operating and maintenance procedures for major systems.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or physics.
  • Strong grasp of electrical and electronic fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with circuit schematics and electronic test equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and electronic hardware.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of facility users, scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of RF and high voltage systems.
  • Three (3) years progressively responsible related work experience.
  • Knowledge of analog circuit design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of high voltage system design and operation.
  • Familiarity with specialized diagnostic tools such as network and spectrum analyzers.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and CREO design tools.
  • Knowledge of interfacing electrical hardware to integrate with machine control systems.
  • Knowledge of particle accelerator or laser systems.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Work will be required in designated radiation, laser, and high magnetic field areas.

  • Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds and climb a ladder up to 10 feet.
  • Ability to wear personal protection equipment.

Other Information:

  • The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level based on their level of knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Work will predominately be on-site.
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required.
  • Some off-hour call-ins for emergency repairs will be required.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. This is a multi-level position and the full salary range for this position is $78700- $131750 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
