Job Summary:

The Charge Nurse is to be clinically competent; delivers care to patients utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation; and effectively interacts with patient, facility staff, and other health team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing. Serves as supervisor for assigned shift under the direction of the Director of Nursing.

Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:

  • Utilize the nursing process by demonstrating appropriate assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's care.
  • Ensures adequate staffing for shift in coordination with Director of Nursing.
  • Make daily shift assignments and ensures all daily shift assignments are accomplished during shift.
  • Utilize useful Team Building and Management Skills.
  • Perform ongoing assessment and revise plan of care based on new data and patient's condition.
  • Communicate with the physician regarding patient needs, the nursing assessments, and recommendations on a daily basis, and as needed.
  • Prepare daily shift report to communicate unit activities, patient needs and follow up required to ensure continuity of care.
  • Prepares and submits statistical data, monthly activity and annual reports to the Director of Nursing.
  • Perform direct patient care, and infirmary oversight utilizing established procedures, policies, and standards.
  • Administer medications according to policy and procedure, observe and document patient's response to pertinent medications.
  • Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation according to form guidelines.
  • Responds to emergencies.
  • Accurately transcribe physician orders according to policy and procedure.
  • Assist patients with concern and empathy; respect their confidentiality and privacy and communicate with them in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Assist in the orientation/training of new Team Members.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Perform other duties within scope of practice as assigned.


Qualifications

Required Education / Experience:
• Valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
• Five (5) years RN experience preferred.
• At least two (2) years RN experience as a charge nurse or supervisor preferred.

Required license/certification:
• Must possess and maintain a current RN license to practice in Texas.
• Must possess and maintain BLS certification.
• Must possess and maintain current Satori Alternatives for Managing Aggression (SAMA) within thirty days of hire.

Working Environment:

This position is in a jail/correctional facility that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts, including holidays, may be required.
