Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing patient population specific orientation and education to nursing staff. The position places strong emphasis on bridging educational needs with clinical performance in patient care areas. This position develops a comprehensive plan for meeting the educational needs of the staff in their unit and carries out that plan in order to support high quality and excellence in patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Performance Standards
1. Complies with safety standards and identifies and reports any variances as described by organization/department/unit policy (e.g. narcotics, medical devices).
2. Initiates and acts as a resource, with development and implementation of a plan of action for identified variances to promote safe patient care and environment.
1. Provides expert nursing care utilizing the nursing process
2. Mentors nurses to apply the nursing process and evidence based practice in their clinical setting.
1. Ensures orientation to new staff on all topics as outlined in orientation policies and procedures.
2. Develops, implements, and/or assists with the orientation of unit/service roles, e.g., relief coordinator, lead nurse, triage RN, rounds nurse.
3. Develops individual orientation plan of new staff in collaboration with the manager and preceptor.
4. Orientation and education records of staff are completed.
5. Ensures orientation for staff performing in expanded or additional clinical roles/functions (e.g., standardized procedures, etc.)
6. Supports preceptors and staff developers to provide an environment conducive for the orientee to learn their role.
D. Staff Development
1. Performs annual needs assessment, develops and implements annual education plan and re-evaluates education needs and education plan as needed.
2. Ensures implementation of staff education programs related to new regulations/equipment/policies and procedures, etc.
3. Ensures implementation of mutually agreed upon education programs that meet unit needs and goals on all shifts.
4. Clinical performance problems of staff are identified and documented, and plan for clinical performance improvement developed with manager.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of and utilizes the principles of adult learning in all aspects of teaching.
6. Ensures that teaching plans/strategies account for and recognize the specific characteristics of adult learners.
7. Acts as a resource in the clinical practice of student RNs and to the nursing instructor.
1. Participates in the development and implementation of corrective action pursuant to survey/regulatory reviews.
2. Assists with quality assurance and performance improvement processes.
3. Participates in the development and implementation of hospital-wide education and certification programs.
4. Participates on committees as assigned.
5. To increase performance improvement and create a cooperative team environment the clinical educator creates and supports a ‘no gossip’ work environment. All issues and complaints go up to the supervisor and not to coworkers who can’t do anything about the issue.

*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience
2+ years of experience is required in an area of similar clinical expertise
Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
Education/Licensure/Certification
Current California RN license
BSN required, MSN preferred
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (ACLS) required
Technical Certification as required per area/unit. Professional certification preferred
