JOB SUMMARY: The Nursing Supervisor embraces the philosophy of person-centered care and manages the direct provision of quality health care provided to all residents of Meriden Health and Rehab as assigned by the DNS and is responsible for the direct supervision of all staff assigned to those Units. Works with the DNS to ensure that the staff maintains the care as outlined in the residents plan as outlined. Provide orientation to job specifics in the Health Care Department, and in the absence of the DNS, may assume the duties as designated and authorized by the Administrator/DNS.

ESSENTIAL/FUNCTIONS:

1. Assumes responsibility for clinical care/ operations during shift.

2. Knowledge of resident's physical, psychological, and social status in the licensed areas including those associated with the normal aging process as well as pathological changes.

3. Responsible for the scheduling of staff or the reassignment of staff in the event of absenteeism or in an emergency on a 24-hour basis to assure 24-hour coverage to meet state regulatory requirements and budget of the Health Care Services.

4. Participates in the development of a staff orientation and training program in corroboration with Staff Development and the DNS.

5. Responds to reports of authorized inspection agencies and consultants in cooperation with the DNS.

6. Participates in the establishment of goals and objectives for the Health Care Services Department.

7. Identifies the needs of the staff on the clinical unit to increase job effectiveness and proposes methods to upgrade and improve quality of care.

8. Ensures that the Pharmaceutical Services Procedure, and State and Federal guidelines for dispensing medications are met by direct observation and supervision of licensed personnel during a medication pass on a routine basis.

9. Conducts probationary an annual performance appraisal of licensed personnel with the DNS as requested.

10. Evaluates all licensed personnel at the end of orientation and annually or more often as necessary in conjunction with CDC. Teachers and mentors licensed staff in supervision of Health Care Assistants. Participates in and assists the charge nurses in the disciplinary and evaluative process of health care assistants.

11. With administrative support functions as the DNS in her absence.

12. Works collaboratively with the Infection Control Nurse.

13. Distributes and ensures completion of monthly Pharmacy Audits.

14. Participates in the development, maintenance and implementation of the Facilities QAPI Program for the Nursing Department.

15. Recommends to the DNS the equipment needs of the Nursing Service Department.

16. Keeps the DNS informed of changes in resident conditions, staffing and staff issues.

17. Responsible for the overall coordination of the nursing units on his or hers shift. Assists the nurse in the provision of direct care if necessary.

18. Coordinates the teaching and directions of the health staff and supervises the delivery of care to ensure that appropriate services and care are provided by charge nurses and health care assistants.

19. Communicates with on-coming supervisor pertinent clinical / operational information from his /her shift
