The OR Control Desk Coordinator maintains accountability for daily operations and delivery of patient care through coordinating, leading and mentoring staff. Serves as a professional leader, role model and expert resource to department staff, and provides direct patient care. Facilitates patient throughput in the OR by maintaining awareness of case flow, personnel, add-on cases and communicating changes to staff, anesthesia and surgeons as needed. Accountable for assigning staff to surgical cases, reviews and adjust case durations, facilities movement of cases to correct OR rooms as needed. Coordination of resources for each surgical case.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree Nursing

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Nurse (RN) Illinois and Basic Life Support (BLS)

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years of Intraoperative experience as an RN.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrates clinical leadership, good communication skills, and the ability to multi-task. Must demonstrate the ability to accept and institute change. Must be able to work independently as well as function as part of the healthcare team.

Essential Functions:
  • In collaboration with the Manager, interviews and selects staff. Provides input and recommendations on clinical ladders, promotions/demotions, progressive discipline and staff participation in unit projects.
  • Makes assignments in conjunction with the OR manager, OR staff supervisors, and service line coordinators based on patient, surgeon, and anesthesiology requirements as well as appropriate to the skill level of personnel.
  • Manages the day to day operations of running the OR schedule, including practice standards, staffing and quality assurance.
  • Monitors on-time case starts for both elective and assigned urgent/emergent cases.
  • Participates in schedule preparation, adhering to team limitations, case types, urgent/emergent demands, and case start times and lengths, makes adjustments accordingly.
  • Proactively reviews future schedules (next day, three days, and one week in advance) with the lead scheduler to address the need for scheduling adjustments. Coordinates advanced schedule situations with the OR manager and anesthesiologists.
  • Supports and enforces organization standards and requirements including but not limited to, compliance regulations, fire, safety/disaster programs, and infection control policies/procedures.
  • Supports the Manager in collecting information for accreditation surveys and departmental audits. Actively assists the Manager with implementation of the recommended changes.
  • In conjunction with the Perioperative Educator, assures that orientees are provided with a preceptor to facilitate the completion of the orientation guidelines. Recommends staff development and identifies educational needs for all roles.
  • Serves as a role model and resource.
  • Manage daily Kronos edits and perform edits for manager final sign off every other Monday.
  • Completes audits that directly impact practice, and then send follow up e-mails for immediate feedback and if possible face-to-face education.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed.
  • Provides coverage for the OR Supervisor as needed.
  • Ensures OR efficiency and workflow process in conjunction with OR Supervisor, Service Line Coordinators, and OR manager.
  • Complete daily rounds including, patient, staff, and surgeon rounding every quarter.
  • Participates in staff interview process and provides feedback / recommendations.
  • Provides input to yearly budget and recommendation of departmental needs.
  • In absence of manager and supervisors responds to customer service issues with patients, families, MD and all other staff.
  • Makes assignments based on patient, surgeon and anesthesiology requirements as well as appropriate to skill level
  • Manages day to day operations of running the OR schedule
  • Participates in schedule preparation, adhering to blocks, team limitations, case types and makes adjustments accordingly
  • Manages on time starts and surgeon availability/report time
  • Effective communication between surgeon, surgical team, anesthesiology and appropriate units regarding surgery starts
  • Monitors surgical cases for efficiency, flow of patients and staff needs
